This is called keeping a customer happy (at least, that is what they call it - the reality is that they were getting rid of a pain in the proverbials). So there was no recall?

Obviously comprehension is not your strong point.

The OP asked a sensible question about tyres, you gave your point of view, I gave mine. The whole point of a forum like this is for the OP to hear a range of views from a range of people, from which they can make their own decisions.

It helps the OP not one little bit to insist that yours is the only point of view to consider, and to even rubbish people before they have had a chance to offer their experience. I for one would like to hear Simon23's perspective.

You may also consider that none of us know the OP's circumstances which will have an influence his decision. For instance, how much does he use his van each year, how long are the journeys, etc.

being a retired motor engineer and know something of tyres i do understand what i advise.if not i keep quiet.the caravan people fit tyres as there design requires.in my case they wanted over £111 per tyre fitted and balanced at the main caravan dealer.when i was looking for tyres i went to three large tyre departments and rang a few more.most did not understand caravan tyres and the loadings, and one said he had never fitted one to a caravan and he had been there 5 years.others fitted a van tyre, check out the web sites and you will find most are trying to sell you a tyre of 90 loading which is a car tyre and would not suitable most caravans.i wanted 195/70/SR14/96N loading and found it impossible to buy.unless i want to pay £111 each that is. you should fit what your hand book says if you can get them.a few wanted to fit tyres at £40 each fitted.better to leave the old ones on i think.

the only silly question is the one you do not ask.

Personally, I find pointers to sources of authoritative advice useful. It's very rare that I have personal knowledge of any of the posters to forums like this - or of their qualifications to offer the advice that they do. There are far too many self-appointed experts around, don't you think?

This is quite an interesting document from TyreSafe. The advice on the first page seems especially relevant:

"The original tyres for a caravan are determined by joint consultation between the caravan and tyre manufacturers and take into account all aspects of operation. It is recommended that changes in tyre size or type should not be undertaken without seeking advice from the caravan or tyre manufacturers, as the effect on caravan handling, safety and clearances must be taken into account."

Good advice, don't you think?

Andrew

OMG, can, worms spilling... lol

well, spoken to local tyre man who incidentally supplies a large local caravan dealer in "perthshire" and he invariably supplies 8 ply commercial tyres to them.

so van tyres it is. maybe not as dynamically good but if an improvement in sidewall stability can be had and a more robust tyre overall..... I have seen to many caravans with either shredded tyres and destroyed wheel arches or worse upsidedown at the side of the road

I replaced the four year old tyres on the van recently. A direct replacement of the originals by my local dealer (Discover Delamere) for £159 fitted. Not too bad for the peace of mind. Was advised that the original spare was fine and there wasn't really anything wrong with the originals but I was happy to have the new ones fitted.

OE tyres on our van were Hankook 8-ply radials.   At four years old, and as we were again taking the van to France, I asked our local tyre depot to quote a suitable alternative to Hankook tyres.  The manager, also a caravanner, said he used Goodyear Cargo 8-ply tyres, so I had two of these fitted.

The spare has never been used, so that will be changed, also for Goodyear Cargo, next year.  In the tyre industry, I understand that, regardless of tread depth, vehicle tyres are considered to have passed their useful life after 5 years or 3mm tread depth, whichever is the earlier.

Bertie.

Yes, that seems to be the conventional wisdom and it's hard to argue against on safety grounds. I can't help wondering, though, whether there isn't an element of self-interest in that advice. If a tyre is goosed after 5 yrs, I don't understand how a re-tread can be deemed to be safe.

Has anyone seen any published research on tyre life and failure rates?

Andrew

well there's something interesting, someone mentioned how the caravan manufacturer must know what they are doing....

I have taken the wheels off our van tonight to drop them off at the tyre shop in the morning, decided to fit the spare, clearly never been fitted, tyre still has the sticker on it, a hankook, the kicker being it does not have a sufficient load rating for the van :(
