Hi

We arrived safely at Camping Harras Panorama in at Priem, Bavaria this afternoon after driving from Dunkerque over 2 days. I unhooked the 'van and prepared to look cool and impressive by siting my 'van with the motor mover, no more pushing eh!!. To my horror and surprise the mover would not move the 'van and on further investigation the brakes seemed to be sticking on and preventing the mover from turning the wheels. The 'van would not push either despite the assistance of several hefty Germans.

At the suggestion of one who spoke a little English I pulled the 'van onto the pitch with the car. I then tried the mover and it drove the 'van backwards and forwards as normal. I'm a bit puzzled by all this as the 'van has just had its annual service. I contacted Red Pennant and they are arranging for an ADAC guy to come and have a look tomorrow morning. (ADAC are the agents RP use in Germany).

Can anyone offer any insights or comments please? I'm not sure how au fait the ADAC chap will be with British caravans.

Not a very auspicious start to our hols as this site was only meant to be a night halt enroute to Slovenia and Croatia.

Thanks
Tim

Hope you get sorted out Tim - on the assumption that the brakes and running gear are ALKO I would expect a German caravan engineer to be familiar with them. I'm not technical enough to venture an opinion but sounds as if the brakes were sticking on when you arrived (badly adjusted and hot from the journey?)

Sounds like it could be the hitch damper that's failed . By moving the caravan forward the hitch has extended and released the brake . A basic test is to push the damper in toward the caravan when you release it should slowly extend back to the forward position . If not it's knackered and your brakes may stick on causing the symptoms you've seen ? Failing that the bowden cables may be incorrectly adjusted - unlikely unless the service people have cocked up ! Hope you get it sorted with the minimum of fuss.

Sounds like rd57chad is o nthe right lines. Also if your last move with the car and van attached was in reverse that may have locked the brakes on without there being any actual problem with the brakes. Caravan brakes don't operate like the cars. They can be circular in two halves and to apply they hinge outwards and enlarge into the wheel. There they can stick. When reversing the brakes kind of operate a bit like going forward and then slamming the brakes on pushing the caravan back applying the brakes.  So to avoid the possibility of the brakes sticking after reversing onto a pitch drive about a full wheel turn forward and that should release any braking of the caravan systems.

You sometimes find after reversing that when unhitching the hitch stays stuck on the tow ball. That can be because the brakes have stuck giving no freedom of the van to move slightly to lift the hitch around the tow ball.

Best of luck. Enjoy your holiday. Glass of Bavarian beer and all will seem well with the world

Phil
