We have bought a tarpaulin from Decathlon (lightweight nylon type) to provide shade on those hot summer days (hopefully). I was thinking of attaching it to the caravan using short sections of old awning skirt threaded into the awning channel and tied to the tarpaulin using elastic shock cord tied to the eyelets and/or 'clingons'. Would these point loads cause any undue stress to the awning channel as opposed to the full awning which would have its load spread along the full length of the rail? This set up would only be used for short stays of a couple of days, in fine weather. For longer stays we would use the full awning. Can anyone see any problems with this set up?

Are any poles involved in this marvellous Heath Robinson erection, David?

Yes Viggo, a couple of poles will be used to support the 'other side' away from the caravan, with guy-ropes. Apart from the method of connection to the van it should in theory look a little bit like a standard canopy. I woul try and thread the tarp through the rail but I doubt I will be fortunate enough for that to work.

Does it sound that bad?

For pictures of my attempt at this see my profile. This was modified and if anyone is interested in the final version email me at 02.co.uk and I'll send them pics of the production version.

Wouldn't it just be easier to sew some awning beading along the length of the tarp and slide it in the rail?
beading £1.50 per metre

That would probably be better Debbie, not so sure about easier. I did consider doing that but as it takes me half an hour to sew a button on a shirt (thats if I can get the needle threaded) I dont think I would have that beading sewn on in time for next years holidays, never mind this years. Might give it a try though - we still have 2 weeks before we go!
