Me again :) we are looking at different caravans to buy moving on from a tent - nothing to great upto £1000.
Looking in the cars handbook under towing it says braked (kg) 1600 and unbraked (kg) 650 - we have a 03 VW passat estate diesel 1.9 turbo - what does the braked and unbraked mean as lots of the caravans I have been looking at just tells you a laden or unladen weight and doesn't seem like we can tow much of a caravan.
The vast majority of caravans are braked - they are fitted with brakes which work automatically on the caravan wheels while towing.
Note that the weight figure you need to be looking at is not as simple as the maximum towable weight for the car. You should never tow a trailer that weighs more than the tow vehicle, and ideally should not exceed 85% of the tow vehicle's weight until you've got plenty of experience of towing.
Hi harrisc0, as Viggo says, caravan or trailer braked by the car via the tow hitch, unbraked - only car brakeing the caravan or trailer,and as such restricted to 30mph max,braked it is 60mph max. hope that helps.
