after the caller after our caravan on the drive yesterday IT got me thinking again. My mum and dad had a 2 birth marauder caravan years ago and they lived in a terreced houes and the caravan was parked on the street right in front of there houes for years they never ever had storage for it. There was another caravan the same in there street. does anyone else do this it would scare me

Seen it quite often - not su=re what aspect of the law tonnee is talking about though, a caravan is no different from any other article left on the side of the road - trailer, wheely bin, skip, etc
------------- Caravanning is a way of getting a cheap holiday out of an expensive hobby
I stand corrected, I always thought you couldnt leave a detached caravan on a public road, but just been looking it up and its not illeagal, but apparently you have to have it lit at night and the rear reflectors must be facing oncoming traffic.
your local council can request you move it though if deemed an obstruction.
You need a licence from the Higway Authority to leave a skip on the highway, otherwise it is an unlawful obstruction and can be removed.
The legal provisions for caravans are set out in section 137 of the Highways Act and Regulation 103 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Act of 1986 which relate to the obstruction of the highway. Just being on the highway is not sufficient to create an obstruction under this legislation. The obstruction has to be willful and designed to deny access to the public to the highway and constitute an unreasonable use of the highway.
Caravans parked on the highway are, generally deemed to be an obstruction and your Local Authority will usually serve notice on the owner of the caravan to remove it. If it is not removed then the police will be informed and the can have it towed away under regulation 3(1)(a) of the Removal and Disposal of Vehicles Regulations 1986. They can charge for the removal and return to the owner
If you do park on the highway the caravan must face with the flow of the traffic and must be lit at night and comply with any other normal parking rules e.g not within so many meters of any junction.
There may also be local Bylaws that prohibit caravans parking on the highway.
If you do park on the highway, other than attached to your car, check with your insurance company.

think mum and dad were lucky then as there caravan ws in front of there houes on the road for yearsI never understood why as they had a huge back garden/ yard have hard staning with great big double gats would have been perfcet for the caravan even with there car in there. I think if they were still alive it would still be there most of the year except for its 3 weeks in blackpool same site ususly nearly allways the same pitch dont know why they just didnt hire a static lol

By law if you leave your caravan on a public highway it has to be attached to your car, it is illeagal to just leave it on the road on its own.
But nobody will do anything about it unless it causes an obstruction or is parked on a major road or someone makes a complaint.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
Hi , For the reasons Phil stated in his post above, if I had to leave my caravan on the road at night for any reason, I fitted two relays, for this purpose one to opperate the side lights back and front of the caravan, and the other relay is to opperate the hazard warning lights via a flasher unit, and both can be switched on indipendently to each other.

Generally that is true but Local Authorities do take action without a complaint and anyway, there is usually someone around who complains and it can be a real hassle once the powers that be get on to you

Hi, not far from where I live, there was a big caravan parked on the street for about 6months, the road is a bus route between houseing estate roundabout and main road, and has a slight left hand bend and there is no walking access from most of the houses to the road, and when passing by last year noticed it was gone, a little later on found out that the owner was ordered to move it, as the authoritys had, had numerous complaints about it causeing obstruction, not surprised though, it was parked on the left hand bend of the road. only surprise was the lenght of time it took for them to act, there is always someone that will complain or report anything, but in this case it was justifiable.
