We have had our van since April and we love it, but we are thinking about px it for somthing a little bit bigger and a bit newer, the dealer we bought the van from has two vans come in that we have taken a shine too, we have never px a caravan before, what do you do? Do you take the van there or do you just give them the details of the van, as I said we bought our present van from them only a few months ago so they might remember it ( I doubt it though) I know this may sound stupid but I havnt a clue, and is it still ok to haggle a bit when part exchanging, last time we sold our other van private as it was way to old to chop in , so last time we had nothing but cash so got quite a good deal.
Any tips help ideas welcomed.

Always chance your arm, if you dont ask, they certainly wont offer! Where did you buy from?

South east caravan center just down the road from me, I know when in the past I've px cars you take the car down and they look it over , but I don't know if the same applies to vans, I mean I could it would only take 5 mins to tow it there.
I have spoken to dealers regarding a part ex although yet to go through with a deal. Most dealers will give an estimate on a part ex value without seeing it, based on the book price. If it then turns out to be damaged or damp of course when you take it in they will probably reduce the offer.
I personally would never take my van into a dealer and tell him I am looking to do a part exchange, it makes you look far to eager to do a deal on the first van you see.
When it comes to negotiating with a dealer, you have to be prepared to walk away if he is not prepared to negotiate in the direction you want. It's not so easy to do if you have a caravan on the back of the car.
So what I should do then, is take a jaunty down there without the can on the back ( does look a bit eager I guess lol) and have a look, then just ask out of interest and not appear to eager, and talk it through with them and if not in our favour walk away, there will always be other vans.
Thanks
legs down :)
We did a px last month but we have also been caravaning a long time and are wise to it.
The key to it is DO YOUR HOMEWORK before you go, go on line or find a site and get a good idea what your existing caravans worth, both as a private sale and as a dealer sale, at the same time get a feeling of how much the type of van you are looking for is realy worth.
Most reputable dealers will give you a px price without seeing your caravan, but be honest in its discription, one tip! if you have one, sell your awning seperatly, they realy are not interested and you do not get any more for it as its the caravan they are giving the PX for.
However as we found second hand sales are now slowing down so Negotaite hard, remember its a poor salesman who will let you out of the showroom if he knows your a serious buyer, so just site there and negotiate, we saved over £1,500 off the original asking price which at first could not be reduced! in an hour!,Plus a full service, 2 year warranty insurance and new water pump in with the deal.
Thanks mike that's really helpfull, going to do a good search as to what our current van is worth, I have also noticed about 8 weeks ago this dealer had vans in and within a week they had sold, now they are sitting there longer, thanks again you have helped alot :)

Yep, it is getting to that time in the season when 'new' second hand buyers will think - lets now buy in the winter and get a bargin!

Px in April. I have found the best way is to decide on the van I want, ie layout, look around a few dealers and loosely talk trade in values and then go back where you can cut the best deal. Always keeping in mind age, maintenance and storage. This time round we bought our van at a dealer which was £1000 dearer than down south, but maintenance at hand and little extras thrown in, and gold cassoa storage. This is a 5 - 7 year minimum van for us and kids so long term with warranty and the usual repairs vans need, will work out cheaper and less headache.
They'll just look up your van in their book & make you an offer based on it's model & year, if you've only had it a few months from them they should be pretty certain it's damp free and in good condition as I presume they put it through their workshop before you had it.
Be prepared to take a big hit on it though, they always offer low and have about 3k mark up on newish vans, you would definitely get a lot more privately but then do have the hassle of selling it yourself.
Definitely haggle too, get them to throw in the correct awning for it at least.
We're only 5 minutes from our dealer too, we asked them to pop down to see our part exchange as it would save us dragging it up there & bloking their sales yard just for him to check it over. He was happy to grab his damp tester & jump straight in the car.
Our van turned out better than we thought & we took him back to the office where we signed up for a new van straight away. As it happens, we sold our part ex privately so the dealer quote didn't matter but it needed to be done.
We wanted it to be a definite prce uoted by them as part ex & not an estimate with them only confirming the price when they saw the van on handover. I don't play that way. Their price & my price has to be established before signing the order. It's fair both ways then.
The van came with warranty and it still has 4 weeks remaining on it, we damp tested it when we bought it and was dry, the only concern I have is it is going to be a lot less offered on it than what we paid for it, I've been looking on eBay and caravan finder selector and maybe I should hold on to it and sell it privatley next year, the only thing is we will be caravanning all over winter this year so will be using the van more than ever, and our lunar is just a bit too cramped, but we've managed in a two berth before this one so I don't know why I'm moaning lol :) thanks everyone for your help and advice it's given me a lot to mull over.
