I have a 1973 Viking Fibreline. When I connect it to a 2002 car socket (12N)  the car indicator fuse keeps blowing. Also when the car brakes are applied the right indicator light (unblinking), as well as the brake lights on the caravan come on. This also happens when the car hazzards are on too.By coincidence I have just fitted a new socket on my caravan power lead, as the old one was dodgy and some bits didn't work. Have checked wiring of plug and all is OK..

Any ideas. Should I rewire my van?

My Viking Fibreline has only one power towing cable. I gather, from looking at some of the excellent help offered on this site, that my caravan battery will not charge if being towed by a 2002 car with two sockets because of the 12N & 12S new type plugs.

Can any one please tell me how I can fit a 2nd 12S cable to my caravan, so I can charge my battery whilst towing?

It may be that the original wiring in your 1973 caravan does not match the wiring arrangement on your car. I found this out when I got an old trailer for our Boys Brigade and the same thing happened. I just bought a length of new cable and rewired the trailer.

If your caravan doesn't have a 12S cable then to be honest I wouldn't bother adding one just to charge your battery. I'd charge the battery at home - a decent battery lasts us 3 weeks no problems. If you need to charge on site (assuming you have electric hook up) just use a battery charger. If no EHU then a local garage will often charge your battery for a small fee whilst you are out for the day.

I have an idea there was an earlier format/standard to the 12S connector and I suspect you're victim of the change (can't remember year or details).
I'd double check the full wiring in the loom to ensure the van is wired to the current standard as per illustration in this link.
I agree with Grad Sailor too, regarding the fitment of the 12S socket.

I would take the rear light lenses off first and check the bulb earths and for dodgy connections.
