We are thinking about changing from a tent/trailer combo to a caravan. My FIL is giving us his Rover 75 diesel estate as he's buying a new car, and he's towed a van with it for a good few years so at last we will have a powerful enough car to tow a caravan! Our budget will be about £3000 and for that we'll need the van, awning, and any bits and bobs specific to caravanning -we already have oodles of camping kit. We need a four berth, although five would be nice. (Three kids, but the boys will sleep in the awning on long trips and they can all squidge up for short ones, they're not too big yet!)

So, will our budget get us anything halfway decent and what's the best way to go about finding it? Ebay? Dealers? Private ads? Anything else we need to consider?

Thanks.

The first thing to remember is that at this time of year, especially in the next 3 or 4 months is that you hold all the cards in respect of it being a buyers market. Look at all the places you've mentioned and take your time, don't buy the first thing you see. If you can then take someone who knows what to look for. If it's dry and everything works as it should ie fridge on gas and electric, oven, charging system and toilet. Then don't be afraid to put a low offer in. I'd be looking at anything advertised at £4500 and under and make them an offer. Just remember you're in the driving seat and take your time and you'll find the right one for you. I'd also add that i would go for a 5 berth,if you want to go away in winter or can't be bothered with an awning then you'll have plenty of room in the van. You'll find the kids will soon out grow a 4 berth amd it'll cost you to change again. Good luck.

Try Caravan Finder for some idea of what's about for sale and you can also get an idea of layouts as well Your FiL sounds like he knows his way around a van so try and take him with you to view any

We got our second 'van off autotrader.  They do have a caravan's for sale section.  I also googled the makes of 'van i liked to see where else they were for sale.  Preloved is another place to try.

I think you'd be better off getting a 5 or even 6 berth caravan.  It can get cold in the awning whatever time of year it is.  Our son came and got in bed with us in July because he'd got cold in the awning.  It's best to have enough beds in the 'van for everyone.
