if the battery is hot it is completely US and could explode if conditions are right.its shorting out inside.that is where the smell is coming from.like a bad egg smell.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------1 )  the word i was looking for is sulphation.under normal discharging, fine crystals of lead sulphate are formed on the plates and,by recharging, these are convertible.if the battery is left discharged for long period, however, these crystals turn into coarse lead sulphate crystals which are not easily converted back to the fine state and may ruin the battery..

2 ) the effects of suphation are (a) a reduction  in the battery Ah capacity and (b) to impede the charging process causing the battery to become very hot

3) in minor sulphation cases extended periods of charging at low currents will improve the situation.,but in serious cases the battery becomes unusable because of internal short circuits which result.

a short passage from one of my motor electronic books.it may explain it a bit more.

Thanks Michael for taking the trouble to find that in your electronic book .I am taking the van back to the dealers tomorrow ,so hopefully they will sort it all out (properly this time I hope )

To be honest I find it hard to understand all the possible causes ,all I know is they fitted a new charger and battery ,the battery doesnt stay charged and that rotten egg smell was very very strong .Also the battery was realy hot .

whether its a faulty charger , battery or something else is causing it to fail I am not sure , I just hope it gets fixed properly this time .Thanks again Rob
