Hi, That's me just back from France. It was great so thank you for the replies - much food for thought there. I've just bought (through this website private ads) a full size awning in case we use the wee coachman next year as mzzy suggests, but I will keep an eye out for a fixed bed van as per your welcome suggestions.
like the idea of having a caravan overhere and one in france. i have been looking myself of doing the same as we enjoy hols over here, but feel rather limited. we like the skiing, walking cycle ect and would like our hols overseas and our weekend still overhere. you are the first i have come across who has done this and would welcome some feed back of advantages and pitfalls.the point of keeping a older van abroad seems to be a pointer which i have digested. is it best to leave on sites or in storeage?. i have heard of some reasonable prices on the storeage front, but dont know enough.

runone
Sorry runone, Just found your request when looking back! I have indoor storage at a nice site in Loire Valley - E350 per annum. But you save on ferry costs (2 annual trips for us most years) and save on fuel on the journey (around 1000 miles each way) French caravan insurance is said to be cheaper.Quicker journey times. No real downsides up till now. I serviced the running gear and fitted new tyres which will last for a few years.I also resealed the awning rails and window rails. I can give further storage details if you are interested. You need 2 sets of everything so better to buy fully equipped if poss.

Adria Altea 432 PX is 4.3mtres.
I've had one of these, one of the first imported into the country, Fab van, basic but the fixed bed was so comfy, well built and towed like a dream (light too). New ones are UK specced and have a few more creature comforts.
This is something that's of real interest to us as well - it looks exactly what we'd like ourselves...if it's really just 4.3 metres that is ... I've just seen one advertised for sale (too far away for us I'm afraid) but the ad gives the length as 19' (about 5.84 m)
Would that be an error do you think, or would they be including the drawbar length ?
Can anyone tell me what is the correct way to measure a caravan ?
we have an Elddis firestorm 400/4. although it doesnt have a fixed bed, it has an l shaped dinette at the back which can be made into a small double. We leave it made up, have bought a memory foam matress, it leaves a small area to get into the loo but my wife and I are not big people and we dont find it any hassle. this is our first van and we love it.
