I am looking for better clamps myself and I am considering the stronghold alloy wheel clamp.  It is light, sold secure and supposed to be easy to fit.  I would be interested to hear from someone who has one.

We've got the Alko wheel lock but thats a bit over your budget at a shade over £225.  If we didn't have this lock I think we would probably go for the Milenco Mega for use on the drive as the arms are concrete filled (which will make it pretty heavy).  As I've read that if a caravan is on a driveway or stored in a populated area thieves tend to burn the wheel locks off as its quieter than power tools and the concrete prevents them from doing that - hopefully!!  Having said that its still a bit over your budget at £185ish but this is what we would get as ours is on our drive too.  We have two wheel locks on the drive the Alko and an ordinary Milenco plus a purple line hitch lock, but just use the Alko and hitchlock when on site.

One line of thought is that heavy or awkward to use clamps will not get used and defeat the purpose.  After all these measured make it harder for thieves and encourage them to try somewhere else.  The caravan club insurance specify that a hitchlock alone is sufficient.  I would also use wheel clamps etc. as well.

From what I know the "sold secure" gold are the best ones, but not sure on price. I would fit as many devises as you can at the best you can afford.

Even simple things like storing the caravan under a PIR security light and turning it around so that it makes it harder to move it off the drive, parking cars around it to hem it in for instance are cost free ways to make stealing your caravan difficult.

The caravan club give discounts for sold secure diamond wheel locks but there are only two.  If you were to park a car very close to the side with the wheel lock would that make it very secure?  They might just ram the car out of the way or burn it as well as the wheel lock.  It might be worth a try.

Hmm I don't have a huge amount of respect for Sold Secure wheel clamps after a test report (a link to which I read on a previous thread) had them all off within 4 minutes something.  Which is why Im dubious about how secure you can really make your van - if a thief wants it they will have it.  I believe though that the two clamps I've mentioned above are the toughest out there - I'd be interested to hear different though?

Click here and scroll a long way down to the wheelclamps page. Then it's a case of picking one you like the look of and finding the cheapest price on the web.

MILENCO QUOTE

We note some very interesting comments along the threads. A colleague pointed out we had not responded to the earlier point’s, so I will have a go now. Jaybee commented on the Milenco wheelclamp being "a swine to take off when the caravan sinks in to soft ground." In response we can confirm there is a mechanism in the wheelclamp that locks it fully when the clamp is under duress. This year the weather has been exceptionally wet so the ground was about the softest it’s ever been. Combined with the fact caravans are getting heavier meant this spring has been the worst ever year for this problem. When the caravan sinks in to soft ground with the clamp on they do lock solid by design. We do put clearance in to the wheelclamp to allow the caravan to sink a little and this clearance has increased over the years to accommodate for softer ground and heavier caravans. This year has been exceptionally wet, more than we ever expected. If this occurs, you need to take the strain off the wheelcamp to release it. The easiest way is to raise the corner steadies. This problem is not unique to Milenco and this year other products have struggled with the exceptional ground conditions.

Viffer97 complained about the lock mechanism being difficult to push together and sprayed it with silicone. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS. We do use the best locks in the industry and they do not need lubricating. Cheaper locks typically die cast ones, need oiling to stop corrosion. Ours do not. Oil or grease attracts grit and dirt that may stop the locks working. You can use products like WD40 to clean dirt out of locks though. The wheelcamps should slide together easily and take about 10 to 15 seconds to put on.

If it does not its 1 of 3 things.

  1. The front of the clamp is not parallel to the ground and the left leg is not aligned to the right when fitting.
  2. The locking plates have become damaged, bent, or dirty. If so straighten them or clean them. To clean the clamp we recommend furniture polish something like Mr Sheen.
  3. The wheelclamp is too big, wrong size so it will not line up.

We also have a FAQ section on our website www.milenco.com

I hope all of this helps and if you have any more specific questions please feel free to ring me on 01908 220102.

Nigel

Hi

can I just say that we had all singing all dancing QD Bull Dog Wheel Clamps along with winterhoff hitchlocks and they were cut off with gas extremely quickly and easily. According to the police who visited they said there isn't a wheel clamp they can't get off very quickly.  Sorry to post a negative.

true if they want it they will get it,the only thing you can do is slow them down to get them caught.takes me 15 minutes to free our van.not sure they could do it quicker without the keys.
