Buying caravan from friend who told us caravan is 2009.
Has given us the paperwork to read through and had "first " service completed. Ready to collect and be new owners.
On the paperwork the TV and fridge have dates of 2008!
Yet the owners details have (hand written) that the date of van is 2009!!
Where would the correct details be for the exact dateof the caravan? If 2008 is the case and van has only just had first service in 2010 then the warranty won't be valid which was the whole crux of the decision of buying the van.
We have the van serial number on a document that says the tv was repaired in 2008.
can we check from this.
I am sure she won't have done anything on purpose but how can I get confirmation and cause least upset?
I don't want to lose a friend but this is getting a bit tricky!!
Help. We just transferred the money today. Yes we are muppets we should have checked this first but just took her word for it.
This is turning into a nightmare instead of a pleasure
The 10th. digit in the VIN (which is a 17 digit number)will tell you the year. If it's "9", that means it's a 2009 'van, if it's "8", it will be 2008, etc., etc.
If you check with Cris it will tell you date of first reg with them. The caravan could well have been made in '08 but not delivered to its first owner until '09, which is the date that its 'age' starts from, not when it was made.
A very good explanation of CRIS numbers is here...
Apart from this bit - "...We have the van serial number on a document that says the tv was repaired in 2008...." - I would say that dates of TV and fridge could have been when they were made - but not necessarily fitted in the van - another (guitar) site I visit often demonstrates where components were manufactured one year but held in store for over a year before use; however, as the van number is quoted in the TV repair, this throws a different light on it...

------------- What's the difference between a chicken?
Yes it is looking very much like the van is a 2008 not 2009.
We don't mind that so much but probably only one service done in that time which would invalidate the warranty.
This was one of the things we said was absolutely essential to us before we bought it.
We will not know until tomorrow so patience...............

Sorry to chip in here, reading the info about dating from the serial number - can anyone tell me how this works with an old caravan made pre 2000. ?

The long VIN has been in use since around 1990 - CRiS was formed in !992 but not all caravans were registered with then - certainly not European ones

It won't invalidate the warranty. The warranty does not begin until the 'van is delivered to its first owner. That is when the 'van is 'new' as far is the warranty is concerned. If it was registered to its first owner in Nov 2009 then it is due for annual service in Nov 2010.
could be as our new van i will be collecting in 4 weeks it is 2011 model but manufactured 2010but that still makes it due servive in 2011 does sound like a service has been missed therefore no warranty if this is the case
The warranty begins when the caravan is delivered unused to its first owner. It will have had pdi before the first owner tows it from the dealers & it will be due for its first service at the required interval after that date.
It matters not how long it has been standing at factory or dealers. The caravans' age for purpose of servicing begins when it is delivered to its' first owner, not when left the production line. If the 'van was delivered on Nov '09 then it was 'new' in Nov '09 regardless of the date it left the production line.
Any appliances ie fridges, tellys etc, fitted at time of manufacture of caravan as part of standard or optional spec. will be covered by the caravan warranty not by individual manufacturers of those appliances.
