When you consider the amount of stock that was being carried at Letchworth, all those caravans and motorhomes, I wonder if the bank started to get a bit jittery, management got wind of this and decided to jump before they were pushed.
In the present economic climate this happens a lot and it would come as no surprise........
There is Yeomans and Cross Camping and Leisure over at Melbourn which is only about a 20 minute drive for me but if you were from Letchworth area you wouldn't neccessarily know of them.
I'd love one in Hitchin though as there is plenty of room to show them and if you converted the servicing shed into a tent display we could go looking all year round :)
There isn't much at Round Green! White Arches is OK, and I can recommend the Caravan Company at Finedon, where we bought our van, lovely people to deal with.
I live in Hitchin and have always used Wilmond in Bury Mead Road. I always found them cheaper (and friendlier) than Amber. I only ever went to Amber when they didn't have what I wanted. I had my caravan serviced there this summer and the work was done by Ian who was ex Amber. I was very satisfied with the work they did. You should be able to get most things you need from their accessory shop so there is no need to travel to Luton or GT. They also do towbar fitting.
Amber Leisure still have their site on't outskirts of Clacton-on-sea, I think they own the static park behind it as well. The site has been there for several yrs flogging new & used motorhomes & in last few mnths they have started selling late model caravans & have a fair stock of them.

I think for someone this would now be a great business opportunity in the area to open a camping store, with no immediate competition.
Of course for caravan's there is always Round Green in Luton?
Obviously, there is very little opportunity
to make money in this area, or Amber leisure would still be an ongoing concern. Having said that, I always found them to be very unfriendly and not prepared to put them selves out unless you were going to spend big money. Maybe other people found them to be the same and took their custom else where like I did.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
