Now I may sound a bit daft here, but I want to remove my battery for winter as suggested on here and charge it at home in the garage every now and then.

But, what do I need to buy to charge it?  Can someone post a link as its my first winter and I've no idea whats best.

You need one suitable for leisure batteries. I use one of these and it works a treat for me

I don't keep on charge all the time just every so often during winter.

You may also find this useful for checking the anount of charge in your battery
