HI everyone hope you had a good Christmas.

I have seen many posts here and on other forums about mould or mildew on flyscreens and how to remove the dreaded black spots.

I was very worried about these unsightly black blotches on three front flyscreens. After searching the WWW I thought I would try the dettol method.

Many of the suggestions I read were qualified with partial improvement and warnings to take care etc. I just want to say that this is not a just suggestion, it is a definitive cure for black spots on white flyscreens.

I removed the blinds /flyscreens and using a flat srewdriver removed all tension from the flyscreen roller - this took about 40-50 anticlockwise clicks in my case.

I then rolled out the flyscreen onto a clean worktop and sprayed all over with Dettol Mould and Mildew Remover and spread it as evenly as I could using my palm and extended fingers (wish I had used gloves as this stuff burns but I was worried about colour transfer as most gloves are yellow). Then turned it over to repeat on the other side.

I rinsed the flyscreens in a few inches of cold water in the bath, being careful not to wet the blinds, and towelled them dry flat and even. Then I hung them from the banister for a few hours.

Not a trace of any black spots - absolutely perfect. Just screw up the tension screw to what it was before and back in business.

My only reservation is if you have patterned blinds - I'm not sure what the bleach would do. But mine are pure white so no problems.

I hope that anyone with this problem finds this useful. I am dead chuffed.

Now I only have to rebuild the whole front of the caravan and fix the cracked ABS that caused the problem initially .

All the best for 2011
Jim

Dettol Mould and mildew remover is excellent. The Whizz make isn't far behind.

I use it on the bathroom sealer around the bath and it comes up like new. Also gets the scum off shower curtains and returns them to new as well. Leave as long as possible before rinsing off. (but only on bathroom stuff, not on flyscreens!)

It contains bleach, so patterned flyscreens might need a tiny test on a corner before doing the whole blind.
