your caravanning habits due to increasing fuel costs ?
ie, closer to home, fewer trips,rallies , cl`s ??
we are planning more cl`s ...not that they are really cheap anymore and thinking of going on rallies with east yorks centre, just to offset the increased cost of living , dearer sites etc without losing out on trips away.
Last year we spent on average £13.50 a night on site fees over 65 nights both here and in Europe. The trouble is if you want to visit new places they are usually further away so fuel does also play an important part in holidays costs. At the moment I don't think it will influence us but who knows for the future? Interestingly fuel costs now are very similar to what they were in 2008 but perhaps the difference is that they won't fall back like they did then!
Being both retired we tend to leave the car in the garage a lot and walk or cycle into town, or where ever we need to go, so, once the tank is full it tends to be the case that we don't need to fill it again until the following month (if that). Saving on fuel when at home meets the costs when we are away. So, no, still the same amount of time away. Probably just a tad easier to deal with increases in VAT/fuel tax etc when not working.

------------- If you're not on a fell your wasting your feet and for 2014 it's.......Feb Castleton Mar North Yors Moors; Apr Sutton on Sea; May Thirsk; Jun Clapham/Riverside (Lakes); July Wharfedale; August Crakehall; Sept Knaresborough; Oct Wirral Park/Clitheroe
With diesel at £1.35 a litre at our local garage I am sure we will not be travelling far this summer. A quick nip over to France and a couple of hundred miles on French diesel will probably do us!!
We already mainly use CLs/CSs and normally cook in the caravan. I have just added a review of a new CS near Coleshill in North Warwickshire which is £8 per night and very good for the price I thought, also has a large non ehu tenting area which I didn't mention, would be handy for the NEC, Coventry and Birmingham, or for a stopover as we did so they're not all expensive. The only other way we could save would be to give up alcohol, OH has stopped smoking and I've never smoked.
Fuel costs are always a high expenditure part of our trips away. We try and go local for the odd weekends, and longer for weeks away. Then try and not use the car much once we are on site. Like precious post we always like to try new places and so have to keep travelling further away to find them! A cheap holiday out of an expensive hobby as always!
We will be staying within a 125 mile radius of home, but more because of the need to be able to return home early as both of us have had a few health problems of late, and a fairly scary admission via A&E to Warwick hospital whilst we were staying on the CC site there, although, being retired, yes we do have to watch how much we spend on luxuries and trips away, what used to cost us £45 to fill our tank now costs us £63, so thats one less meal out down the pub!

Celebrating 37 years of Caravanning in 2019, Recently Considered Retiring, but Totally Addicted for Life!
We will be staying within a 125 mile radius of home,
we do and just find holidays within range like keswick and windermere, just somewhere our grandchild can ride his bike round two million times.lol.once at keswick we walk or catch the bus most of the time unless shopping.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
We have been towing with my Smax but OHs company car is due for a change in March so hes gone and ordered himself a nice new tow car and exchanged one of his gadgets for a tow bar, but the best bit is that his personal UK mileage is included in his package which should bring down our holiday costs this year - probably save us a fair few hundred pounds when all considered!!
We're just in the process of changing car from a 3.2 Shogun to a 2.0 Passat & also changing caravan to one that's 150 kilos lighter so hopefully we should be seeing a considerable reduction in fuel costs both for everyday use & towing. Our main holidays are booked & we'll be staying fairly local for any weekends we do.
We are not going to give up our 6 weeks caravanning in Europe. However we are going to avoid French Motorway Tolls and shops. Instead we are going to Austria/Germany [ACSI card] via Benelux countries. The French savings should compensate for any extra fuel costs. Well I hope so.
we are changing from a trailer tent that we only use two weeks a year to a caravan that we can use weekends, near home and france for our main hols, we wanted more comfort camping, so will furl cost put us off vans i hope not
I got shot of my big diesel munching 4x4 over a year ago when the writing was on the wall over incresing fuel bills, A few of you on here mocked my decision.
But now here we are at a few pence off £6 a gallon and I'm laughing Now
