   Hi Phil

            I've just had a look at the regs you refer to ie Schedule 6 Schedule 9-1 and I think your second paragraph may be slightly misleading. As I read it, trailers under 6m excluding towbar are listed under exceptions, and do not, in fact, need side marker lights.

      I only mention it as, and I am sure you will agree, we wouldn't like our tenting friends to suddenly think their small camping trailers didn't comply with the regs.

                    Regards.

                                  Pete.

Update:

I've got one of the front lights off and its no big deal to change. So I'll practise with this one and then have a system for the rest. However [there's that word again] I found another 2 lights up the top [front] of the van that only 1 works. So more to do...

Also 1 of the reflectors is so discoloured its white, it should also be orange. I assume I need to replace it?

You are correct, burrelboy, that there is another exception to the requirement to have a side marker light. There are many other exceptions.

Legal advice is always limited to the facts presented.  So my post was focussed on the specific question posed relating to the OPs caravan rather than upon a question that has not been asked. The exceptions to the requirement for side marker lights are somewhat lengthy and if I listed one that was not relevant to the OP question I might as well have listed the lot but that would have just confused.  If anyone wants them here they are...........

A trailer the overall length of which (excluding any drawbar and any fitting for its attachment,) does not exceed 6 m, or 9.15 m in the case of a trailer manufactured before 1st October 1990;

An incomplete trailer proceeding to a works for completion or to a place where it is to be stored or displayed for sale;

An agricultural vehicle or a works trailer;

A caravan;

A trailer constructed or adapted for the carriage and launching of a boat;

A trailer in respect of which there is fitted to the trailer all the lighting and light-signalling devices listed in items 1.5.7 to 1.5.20 of Annex I of Community Directive 76//756/EEC, as amended, which are required to be fitted under that Annex and all those devices are so installed and maintained that they comply with the requirements set out in items 3 and 4 of that Annex.

Readers should never assume that advice given in one context applies full square to a slightly different situation that may exist in their life. They should always check first.

Phil
