I gave a chance to buy an ABI Award Dawnstar 1991. The van is in good nick and dealer serviced. Has anybody got any pros or cons. Have not been able to find a lot of info about the model Dawnstar. thanks in advance.
Hello Bob,
You may want to take a look here. ABI Caravan Club (Yahoo group)
Other than that, I'm sure there's a few on here with any info you need. Hope it helps, Ray
Any caravan of this age could be damp, main thing is to check for soft patches on floor & walls. The specific caravan you mention will be as good or bad as any other mass produced UK built caravan of similar age.
Hi. We recently bought a 1992 Abi Sunstar - not had the chance to use it yet. We had some delamination problems with the floor which were soon fixed and a number of small repairs to carry out - things like door catches etc. We think it's a super van and seems much more solid and well made than the present day models.
Thanks all for replies so far. Because it is our first venture into caravanning buying from a dealer. Bit more than a private sale but good deal for no trade in. The theory being that he has promised no damp (it looks good) and a full service before buying. So if we prefer tin to canvas will look to trading up in the future. Thats the plan.

Hi bobmel, Welcome to tin tenting, as phil on here would advise get the no damp promise in writting, not saying they will not honour thier word, still better in writting signed and dated, helps make things easy, if problem later down the line, do not know weight of your new van, or the kerb side weight of your car, it is impotant that the van is recomended to be no more than 85% of the tow car, I think there is a tow match service on this site, others will be along to offer you more advice, good luck in you new venture, sure you will love it
------------- If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
If in Doubt Check it Out.
Hi Bob,
I do not know your caravan but we bought a 1998 Abi Award Transtar last year. We have been away in it twice since October and we found it to better finished than many modern vans. Hope you have some great holidays in your van.
Terry
Well thats me gone and done it, now the proud owner of a ABI Award Dawnstar Mk4 1991 vintage. Spotted a leak on the Thursday when I first looked at it and they put it in the workshop straight away and fixed it. The oven and grill look like they have never been used and the rest of the inside does not look its age. The van comes with a complete 1 year guarantee which I was not expecting. It still has to go through the full workshop service and polish etc so should look even better when I pick it up in a couple of weeks. No rush at this time of year. Thanks for the info John, it only weighs 835kg so the Dodge Caliber is well up for that. As a starter I think we should be ok the maybe next trade up a bit. There is some spectacular vans out there. Think March might be the first outing. Changed my avatar to me putting on the sold sticker.
