I seem to recall that it is recommended but for the life of me I can't remember why. I have seen some continental caravans with very small 12v batteries like those used in burglar alarms so I guess you could try that approach if you don't want a big heavy battery. If you can find the make and model of the 240/12v transformer/charger you might be able to check on the manufacturers website. Something tells me that the newer Sargent ones have two circuits, one for power into the 12v system and one for charging the battery. My brain is not working efficiently today as I should remember.

I think you need a battery on your caravan in order to operate the fridge igniter and also to operate the 12 volt water pump unless the water is pumped manually as they did on older caravans.
we have lit the fridge no problem with out a battery last years and the water pump can be maunel or elecetic we camped last year with no battery or hook up but had not been anywere wear there was a hook up avalabel but one of the places were going this year has hook up on every pitch and its included in the price anyway so thought as its thee we might as well use it

If all you want to do is run the fridge off mains it should work ok without a battery. You don't really want be paying out for a leisure battery if you don't need one.
we dont take a tv or computer there just the fridge cold water pump and lights at night no watre heaters or anything else we dont even take anything that plugs in even our radios wind up. just thought it would save on gas if we could hook up for the fridge manly

As your water pump can be pumped manually and you will be on an electric hook up you won't need to ignite the fridge so to answer your question, no I don't think you need a battery. If you have twin electrics on the towcar, make sure that you only plug the black one in to operate the lights (brakes, lights & indicators etc.) and leave the grey one plug out which is the charging one for the on board battery. If you plug the grey one in without a battery installed on the caravan it could blow the electrical circuit if the the battery terminals touch during transit. If it's not plugged in it will have no electrical current therefore it will not be live. Put the plug in it's holder (if you have one) on the 'A' frame or place a plastic bag over the plug with an elastic band to hold it in place to keep out the damp and then strap it up out of the way so it doesn't fall down on to the road whilst travelling.
you dont need a battery to ignit our fridge as we have had no battery or elecetic at any time when we camped last years and the fridge ignited and worked of gas every time. we only have the black toe bar plug anyway so no problme with the other plug

I think Fallenangels fridge is is piezio igniter and therefore would not need any form of power supply. If you are using no other electrical appliances I would stick to gas unless the EHU is inclusive in the site fee and you can't negotiate a discount for no EHU.

Do you own an EHU or would that be extra cost too? Given that you have the hook up why not see if you can borrow a tent hook up connection and take a lamp from home to plug in at night and possibly your kitchen plug in kettle. Won't add much weight but it is great to make a quick brew.
Unless you plan on relying more on mains electric in the future, I would just stay as you are.. apart from the battery you will need a mains hook up cable to add to your expense and weight .. that's if you don't already have one !
we have a EHU cable and to be honsit its allways in the caravan as we bought it before we even used the van for the fisrt time. so has had its weight included since we got it
The hook up cost are included in the price and as its a group booking there no negotiation each unit it the same price weather we use the elecetic or not.
as we have the EHU and the elecetics there just thought if we could use the elecetic it makes sence to just dont know weather a battery needs to be in place or not if a car batterys will do teh job we can get small one form the scrap yard for £10 if that will do the trick

I wouldn't bother with a battery, just plug in your ehu, I can't see why the fridge won't work. Usually the battery is required to operate 12v stuff like water pumps & lights but as you don't use these anyway, the battery won't matter.
