Thanks for the replies.It seems that travallling in Eire is the same as any other EU country ie.EHIC required for basic treatment and health or personal insurance for everything else.I wonder if the Irish take out insurance when travelling to the UK?
The EHIC means that you would not get landed with huge bills, you use the health care system for whatever it costs the locals in whatever EU country you are in. You might have to pay for medicines & emergency ambulances but you can often claim the money back.
It won't pay for an air ambulance home tho. Personally for Ireland, I wouldn't bother, the NHS is only just over the border in NI.
As already said the EHIC will entitle you to the same as the locals whatever that might be. You may need more or in the event of serious illness or injury how will you get back to home?
I don't want to be a prophet of doom but you may need stretcher flown with full medical crew in attendance. I hope you don't but I did.
How much will insurance cost? Not a lot I suspect.
(the doctor that accompanied me said he was out all the time recovering holidaymakers to the uk. I am sure he is not the only one doing it)
Personally if I were going only to Ireland in the one year I wouldnt bother. If I were going anywhere else AS WELL I would take out annual cover. I have a continuous annual cover - costs £30 odd quid for me and OH (both of us not each) and covers for all our european holidays/breaks.
Hi, My son had a bad accident three years ago in southern Ireland, had to be given emergency treatment, ahd it did not cost anything, was treated as if in UK. as millermicm said,it sounds like it is still the case.
