Hi fallenangel, When I rebuild my first van,I used a thin wood veneer(about the thickness of road map front cover), that i got from saw mill, they used to pack the veneer in between each layer of doors to stop them getting marked, they used to bin the veneer,so got all i needed for van, Free of charge, made thin strips of wood for frames, doors, cupboards, and only made frame thicker where needed, wortops etc. Dont think they use the venner to pack any more, you could use very thin plywood, about the thickness of two match sticks, that would be strong and light, you can make wooden door frames, then plane out a lip to take the ply wood,,,,(just like the back of picture frame) if you have a router tool you can make cornice type mouldings, be a nice touch.
------------- If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
If in Doubt Check it Out.
3 mm veneered ply is easy to buy, and 8mm thick softwood the same.with this combination, you can make what size panel you like, and they will be very light.I found that Evostik, a few "G" cramps and an old flush door (to cramp the panel to )came in very handy for gluing the panel together.Edging was made from iron on tape to hide the wood core, or you could rebate the doors to fit the doors so that they fit through an overlap rather than trying to make the doors an accurate fit into the frame if you no what I mean This way you would need to paint the edges instead of using the edging.

I saw on another forum that someone just painted them. Which is what I am thinking of doing. White and silver for the kitchen I think. Probably have to PVA them first though. I am not sure if the peel and stick stuff would work. You could go as wild or sober as you wanted without any imitation wood in sight.
i did think of paint but being the clumsy sod i am would end upchiping and scraching the paint withing days. at the momnet my thoughts are going towards the mirror sticky back plastink in the pannles of the big doors of the tolet and wardrob at least and leave the edges wood. so there not so much of it on show as the colour of the wood look ok with the wallpapper its just dark and there so much of it. as the wallpappers silvers and pink the mirror stuff should look ok but will be keeping my eys open incase somthing elas appers

If you use the mirror sticky back plastic let us know how well it does. I have some and had thought of using it but haven't had much luck with it sticking too well before.
We painted our daughters melamine fitted wardrobes a few years ago with special melamine surface paint. We used a 4" foam roller as a brush didn't give a very smooth finish. After 4-5 years the paint has only come off in one small area by the door-knobs, and you know what kids are like. The only thing is there are not many colours available, luckily Lilac, that we wanted. was. According to my neighbour a firm in Heysham, called Ecos sell a multi surface paint in 100+ shades which can be used on melamine. Might be worth a Google?
Good luck with whatever you decide to do, it's bound to look better than loads of plasticky "wood".
Pete.

I did wonder how the paint would wear.
i am a revam freak and since getting married never had money do did up everything and anything and found a coat of pva left till allmost dry made anything stick. just rememeber you cant repossions its a one shot stick thought.
I dont think would even risk the melomine paint as ine corner of the wood plastc would lifte a bit so its not a good serfec to paint which is a shame as our £1 has lot of tins of melomine, fridge, and radiatour paint in at the momnet. the most drastic think i could do is but a hot hair dryer on the pvc and it would sofen and peel of. i migfht take a trip to a caravan breakers and get some old plastic wood doors to have aplay with. if the stuff comes of easy. it can all be striped back seals and and painted. cant see if being done any time soon thought next d=job is outside the van so think it will be mirrored doors for now

I will have to try the PVA and see how well it works on a bit that won't show. I am bound to get it on crooked. I might persuade OH that he has a steadier hand.
I think having paint sent to me wouldn't be too cost effective. I will have to have a look for some here now I know such a thing exists. Thanks.
