Hi All, If you saw my post on Got My Orders, this is a wee up date, Cut out pair of curtains,  got second hand sewing machine out dusted it down, used old cloth to test stitching, managed to hit thumb nail with the needle clamp screw,  after few test runs found stitching very loose on under side of test cloth, after some hair pulling, whent on web to look for a manual ( no manual with it when bought ), found a manual in PDF form ( £5 ), printed it out, gave machine a good clean and oiled it, as per manual, good £5 well spent, need to do few more test runs to get the tension correct, have looked at sewing tips on web (how to sew), found out ,as i thought would need to press heams before stitching, as it made it easy to handle the material, for straighter line, have few erands to run now, so attempt it later, keep you all posted on progress, if i have not stitched my self to the material.

Hi fallenangel, Was that a book of matches!!!!, Started about 3 o'clock, finished 8.45, with all the interuptions, managed one small curtain 2ft X 2 1/2ft, with the linning sewed in, the linning is a pure b... as it is very thin and it slides of the grips under foot tool, curtain material frays and is cheap crap ( £35 a pair ready made), the weave is very loose, material and linning has glazed sheen so not the best to start learning on, nevertheless, got it the right size as old curtain, stiched at No.6 setting, forward and reverse stitch, tension is correctly set now, neat stitching though a little of the straight, not a great job but pretty good, tested stitching popons on old bit of cloth, think will need better quality thread, as the thread kept fraying and breaking, even when threading the machine with no tension on it,(needs a stronger good quality thread),would have prefered a plain material, but could'nt find one that was good match for the Velvet colour of seige, Tunstall wood, (will do), the machine is an old secondhand singer stylist zig zag 457 model, nice and simple compered to new ones, with all the digital modes, less to go wrong with this one. may yet use your link, All in all think i have done extremely well to keep all my fingers intact up till now, (touch wood) , Tanks for encouragement and advice, may need some more in the near future,

When sewing the popper tape make sure you use heavy duty needles, the ones for jeans or you'll keep having thread problems it all goes hand in hand. Have you got pins? Pin the material and lining before sewing to help hold it in place you can sew over the pins if they are in sideways to the line of stitching.

Hi Andi, Have the size 14,16 needles, will use the 16 when doing the popons, thead is a 40 twist, manual states 50, tread kept headgehoging when passing through
needle, (dose same with no tension on thread),  tension setting at 2 (4 - 5 recomended), (but suspect it will vary with different quality of threads), Have the pins, and have pinned cloth together before stitching, have folded bottom of linning in 1/4" and run iron over it, next folded it up 2" to make bottom hem for linning and to give me a straight edge pinned and ironed, to run along the guidline markings on throat plate, the first one is all ways trial and error, and takes ages, till you get the hang of it. will start on the next one later, will leave popons till all is finnished, One thing has become apparent, that is to do the bottom linning hems first, then change thread colour, ready for curtains, been refering old curtain to see how they were stitched, and just did the same, will try and upload photo at later time. Now where the hec did i put that sewing machine.

i never  hand sew i just pin make sure your pins are pointing towards the the seam to be sewn of the fabric so the pin is at the edge and you can then sew over the pins without having to remove them. so your fabric is heading north your sat south and your pin points to the west and heads to the east. hope that makes sences. if your mane fabric is fraying badly it might be worth doing a zig zag stich around each peaces before you sew them togethere just to stablize the frayed edge.  and if your sewing cottons old it can be a nightmare for tagalaing and spliting so some ne cotton shouls help

I tend to use Coates or Gutterman cotton as there's nothing worse than the thread snapping all the time, very frustrating! You seem to be doing everything right, I'm impressed You can hem all the bottom linings first then change your cotton and sew the actual curtain to save having to swap all the time.

Pics would be great and have faith in yourself you're doing really well.

Hi Andi, Given up on making these Curtains for van, The linning is so thin and silky, keeps slipping of the straight even when pinned and streched, the curtain material gets a snag at the least touch from anything that it touches ( not recomended for beginer ), linning so thin you can see through it,and spit peas though it, cant unpick stitch without material comming apart, whent to sewing shop to get thread, and they'er thinnest linning is thicker than the one I am useing, so as for making van curtains out of this material that it will not be happening, That material is only good enough for practiceing on,or for the very experienced machinist. As for the £35 for the pair (ready made) money or time not wasted as it has been good learning experiance, I now know that - that is not the crap quality material that I want for curtains in the van, Unless I hang up the one curtain that I made, Not given up on making curtains (never let anything get the better of me, and do'nt intend to start now),When you buy these things in sealed bags, you cant feel or see the quality of material that you are going to work with, So hunt is on for new material. Will be looking for something like  Heavy Cotton/ Velour/or Suede type material, the linning will be thicker and of a better quality, As for the crap material. Will still make set of curtains out of them, even if they end up being 1foot square.

Hi fallenangel, That is exactly what i was going to do with them,They are not totaly scrap curtains, it is just the way the material is acting, putting them up as they are would be ok, but not if any thing catches them, far to easy to snag,so not good material for every day use in a van, as said in post above they will not beat me,still going to carry on and finnish them, If for no other reason than practicing, while I find the colour and material I am looking for. So I will be getting the material by the meter and will make them up.

Hi Andi, will look out for they makes of cotton, Thats what I thought, It would take up so much time keep having to swap thread over, Not giving up on curtains, just giving up making them for the van, with that material, and if I can do well with crap material, then should do a good deal better with quality materials,( Its all dood practice when do the proper set.)  will carry on and finnish making them while I look for the cloth and colour that I want, and the crap material ones for van during the winter storage. will try and up load some pics if I can.

Does the material have to be velvet? You could use a different material with a heavier weight lining instead.

Glad you're not throwing in the towel though, keep at it, if you can sew that material into some semblance of a curtain you'll have no problems with the 'real' ones.

Hi Andi, No Dose not have to be Velvet, But got my orders, it has to be of a fabric similar in appearance, was looking at suede type material, and brush type nylon/dralons?, Colour has to be Choice 1, the Velvet colour of Sege ( 9111, 900 range ) 2, a light mink colour, 3, a dusty pink (looks like light mink ), so nice easy task there. I have taken a few photos of what i have made so far, will try and up load to photo bucket, then down load on here, have used the existing hems of ready made curtains, to save on cutting, and use them as straight edge, so a bit of cheating there, the small curtain was made from the cut cloth, no hems or seams, turned out not to bad concidering the material. Post pics Later.
