Hello,

My search for a six berth caravan, with fixed bunks for the kids continues.

I am currently watching an Ace Prestige 65 on ebay....

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280627970734&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_2186wt_1141

What are peoples thoughts on Ace as a manufacturer and in particular the caravan listed?

I have done a bit of googling and can't find much on Ace caravans. There also doesn't seem to be many second hand ones for sale compared to Bailey, Swift etc.

As a caravan newbie I suppose I am just looking for a bit of reassurance before sticking a bid in!

Ace is/was part of the Swift group(largest UK caravan manufacturing company)but caravans are no longer produced under the Ace brand name.

Hi,
We have a twin axle Ace caravan and have been very happy with it. The one you are watching looks nice - good to have a mover as well - we have found that very useful. Good luck.

nice unit expect it to go for about 7500 tops but that wont ness be the book value or what you will get back from insurance.

myself would not advise paying any more than 6700.

We had an Ace Prestige 55 and were very pleased with it.  It is a Chichester Caravans dealer special. We were very pleased with ours, the only fault I can think of was the back cushions went a bit saggy, no probs apart from that.

Good luck with the auction, that looks a nice caravan especially with a mover too, they are about £1K, with the same colourways as ours.

Will you be looking at the van before you bid?  If you're not able to I'd ask them about service history & when it was damp-tested.

I'd also check that the pics on ebay are of the actual van rather than library pictures (it's the absence of any belongings & the cellophane on the floor that makes me wonder).  You can always ask them to email pics to you.

Once you've got those things confirmed, make it clear that you'll only proceed with the sale (assuming you win the auction) if the van is as described (including service docs & damp test results) when you go to collect it.

Might also be worth asking for the CRISS No so you can check it before bidding?

I'm just wondering why someone has bought a 6 berth van & only ever used the front beds?  And why fit a motor mover then decide to sell?

Sorry to sound cynical - it does look like a really lovely van so good luck with the auction if you decide to bid!  We've just got a 2007 Compass Mendip Magnum with the same layout & love it.

something strange going on yet again with E Bay it had bids on it.  no reserve listed and now says auction ended with no bids.

a starting bid is about right for value of it. £5k looks as if they are trying for more with no intention of letting go untill there are no more lookers/potential buyers.

have a look at Preloved and Gumtree a lot more honest sellers than E Bay

I was in email contact with the seller and they ended the auction a couple of days early. Claimed that they were disappointed at the amount the bidding was at and didn't want to loose the caravan on cheap. Pretty strange. Why list the van without a reserve if that is the case?

You will probably find that a friend was bidding it up, then he decided to finish the bidding early, either because the rightful owners returned home!! or it was sold on his plot, he sold another van just before this one, also plastic on the carpet tells me its on a dealers plot.

well spotted and investigated. that must be the reason.  yet another case of an ebay account shafting the buyers.

there should be a black list of these sellers. other than the feed back syatem as it plainly fails to work !

Oh what a lot of armchair experts and gold medallists at jumping to conclusions - wrong ones as usual!
The Ace Prestige 65 on Ebay is mine - me aged 60+ a private individual with an exemplary feedback history on Ebay. How some folk can translate my buying and (minimal) selling record of all kinds of things into me being an Arthur Daley selling a dodgy caravan is so comical.
The Ebay posting was pretty clear and invited viewings and questions from anyone interested; I've owned the caravan for 2 years, using it has confirmed it is too big for just wife and me (we bought if because it was a good deal when we up-graded from our old Swift and we were simply seduced at the time by the roominess); the motor mover was fitted just because it is big to push around!. Cleanliness and carpet cellophane in photos is because we look after our caravans.
Wife and I eventually admitted it is really too big for us so advertised on Ebay stating very clearly we really preferred to do a deal with someone with a smaller van, rather than sell. All this was in the ad!!
As for bidding - that was nigh on non-existent. 2 or 3 bidders took price to around £5500 in 6 days. With just over 12 hrs left on the auction (& you cannot stop an auction with less than 12 hrs left)I cancelled the auction rather than risk my excellent cossetted van not even achieving £6000. I decided to keep my 'van (& I still have it).
Upon what evidence some can see fake bidders, shyster dealers and all the rest I fail to see.
All very sinister indeed for all you conspiracy theorists though I suppose!!

Opinion may regard ebay sellers as disingenuous for pulling an item listed without reserve if it fails to attract enough bids. It depends how you view it. Obviously buyers want a bargain but one can hardly blame a seller for being unwilling to let an item go for a fraction of its' worth.

If a seller seeks a mimnimum price for their listing then they should set a reserve. Pulling an item because it has failed to attract sufficent bids is not really in the spirit of ebay rules.
