Hi all, we would like your opinions on seasonal pitches & storage on sites regarding how far you travel or would be willing to travel for your holidays. So, as most of you know there are not many seasonal pitches available (long waiting lists) or they are very exspensive so the other option for many of us who cant/wont tow is storage on a caravan site that you would like to stay on. How far do you travel/or would be willing to travel too to end up in an area that you know that you & your family would enjoy? Our situation is maybe once a month for long weekends through the cooler months & longer stays in the summer season when the children are off from school. We live just outside Cardiff & are looking to put our caravan in Tenby, which we both think is a lovely place but with it being place that we have visited many many times over the years via car trips & family that live close wonder if we would be better going elsewhere. We are going to store Bertha at the site in Pembrokeshire this year but wonder what all you lovely people do on here that are not able to tow. We have in mind the Dorset area as last year we all fell in love with Poole etc but also fancy Lyme Regis & even Ilfracombe but is it worth the extra travelling?

------------- I hope caravanning is as much fun as camping!
for Lyme Regis etc try Thornleigh at Horton they have limited storage but dont know what rates are. owners live on site and house is at entrance so as secure as can be.
Its each to their own about traveling time but I think around an hour is about right. We are putting ours in storage on a C&CC site in Shropshie we can do it in 50mins with a tail wind. It was taking us that to go and get the van from storage and go to our local site (now closed except for a few weekends) so its a no brainer for us.
If you want to go to Ilfracombe area try Newberry Valley site at Combe Martin, brilliant site.
We live in Leeds, and put our van in Aviemore, Scotland for the winter. Probably one of the best decisions we made: on average 1.5 visits per month, Hogmanay in Scotland, fantastic scenery, and an obligation to go, which can overcome the pressure to work. (We have our own business)
The drive is 6 hours typicaly, and we run it straight after school, or 5 am in the morning. Everyone loves the adventure, but he 6 hour journey is a tad expensive...in the Discovery.
maybe not for everyone, but a wonderful opportunity to have our own "ski-chalet".
We live in Swansea and have a seasonal pitch in Gower this year .I'd say its between half an hour and 45 mins from home.
We had a seasonal pitch at the site many years ago and have manged to get back on this year .
Its ideal for us because in the summer hols, I can stay there with the kids and hubby can go to and from work easily too.
I don't drive, so he can go to work from site , call in at home after work to check everythings ok,or pick up a bit of shopping on his way back to the site in the evening.
We can also stay sunday night and get the kids to school from site monday mornings in term time.
Site fees nearly 2000, so have to spend as much time there as possible to get the value out of it.

I can't understand why you would buy a tourer if you don't want to tour. If you want to stay in one place then why not buy a static.
Not everyone wants to tow wether thats male or female for reasons of their own. Our situation is that i want to tow but cant at present until we change our car. Answered your question?

Actually we looked into a static but the prices were unbelieveable! We would have had to rent it out almost all year to cover the costs which probably would have only given us a handful of weekends in the van! There are so many more costs owning a static than you first think.

we had a tourer on seasonal pitch in strathyre that was about and hour and twenty ,then bought a static at glendochart which was nearly two hours, both good sites ,we liked the fishing in the area so stayed in the one place with tourer as it saved the friday night rush ,the static got a bit pricey for our pockets so had to go back to touring ,personally i would prefer seasonal pitch as i hate the packing and unpacking due to the fact ive rheumatoid arthritis and sometimes it can be a big sore chore,my friends got a tourer on loch lomond and its nearly two grand all in including electric ,scenery beautiful but cant afford the running costs up and down in a 4x4 or the two grand so have to stick to touring for now,its about 40 quid round trip ,you have to count all these costs up when thinking about seasonal pitch ,
The cost the site, travelling, etc might be similar between a seasonally-pitched tourer and a static, but having just gone down the static route I can tell you absolutely catagorically (and don't let all the adverts telling you statics are available for next-to-nothing fool you) they are EXPENSIVE beasts, if you want one of a quality you would actually want to stay in youselves rather than use as a 5-star chicken coop!! So, although for us the static was the way to go, I can fully understand people wanting seasonal pitches for their tourers.
Well said Scampi! We couldnt believe it last year when we looked into statics! We were 150% sure thats what we wanted........until we sat down with a few of the caravan parks we were interested in & they informed us of the running costs etc that they dont tell you at the start! They try & persuade you in all different ways & try to make it look all nice & rosy but believe me you really need to do your research FIRST

we love the lakes,it is two hours drive for us and far enough with petrol prices going through the roof,ie.keswick and windermere.Moffat in scotland is a fabulous site.abut three hours drive and maybe 4 for you.CCClub.
