'A double deck bus pulled in a the bus stop & not one person getting off that bus even bothered to look at the house as they passed it. I phoned the police & they wanted to know more about me & what I was doing than they did about the house with the activated alarm.'

In our previous house a burglar alarm was going off in the next road at 4am.  I phoned the police and the person that answered said that they don't investigate them anymore as they are always going off at random.

We got burgled a couple of months ago while we were out in the evening for a couple of hours.  There was a car and a caravan on the drive and a dog in the house.  I was going to go in for all sorts of security devices but in the end who wants to live in a house that is like fort knox.

The livery where we keep our horses had a quad bike stolen from a barn a couple of weeks ago.  They have 3 dogs on their grounds ( 2 of them are rottweilers ) and the thieves had to cross a cattle grid.  Nobody heard anything.

The crime rate in our town is very low.  Our area has crime rates well below the national average.  This page shows recorded crime in January for our town.

Home burglar alarms will put off 99% of opportunist thieves as they will probably go to a house without an active alarm box (SAB).
The majority of people who say they are a waste of time are the people who don't have one fitted or have never been burgled.
What normally happens is when they do get burgled they are the people who get the best system money can buy !
I have seen this happen so many times.
Is it worth the risk for a few hundred quid for piece of mind ?

If thats the case then you only need a box on the outside of the house.

Great advice everyone! As my friend install's alarm systems for a living and the previous owner of our house had 6 core cable routed to front and back doors, outside of property, all to routed to a convinient place under the stairs, we will go ahead with this.

A bit worried about using the timers you plug in and run a lamp from. They seemed, to me, to be a good idea and wasn't aware of fire risk.

The police have been round and issued us with some forensic/identity/DNA liquid (watermark)that we have applied to all valuables. And window stickers.

May install a fake cctv  camera, purely as deterant, for now. Advise from alarm friend.

Cheque on it's way for my £550 mountain bike, not sure whether to replace like for like or buy 2nd hand/cheap.

Just looking at the houses opposite me and only two of about 20 have alarm boxes on the front. They are terrace houses, but they back onto playing fields?
