It is a bit close but we have two bikes on and put them as high on the rack as possible,its a bit trial and error really as bikes are different sizes.If its been a while i can never remember which is the best way round to put them on,we usually but one facing one way and then the other bike facing the other and get them as close together as possible.It also depends on how close the van is to the car.
We have tried putting them on the roof but its a long way up to lift them and we use a roof box now anyway.
Perhaps you could borrow one and have a trial run?
