we came from frame tent to caravan last year and have had a few trips out in the van. we have an awning aswell and the dogs sleep in there crates in there at night. now as the dogs are in the awning I allways have the side window intothe awaing opne and the caravan door open at night. I cant see it being any differnt to sleeping in the tent as i allways had the fly screen n the bedroom down a bit so i could see the dogs. does anyone else have there van door open at night or as hubby says is it just me thats a nutter

No, we always lock the van door top and botyom, not bothered for myself, but concern for the kids. We tent aswell in the warmer months, and closer the outer tent, and leave just the fly screen up on the inner tent. Our dog is a bit soft, not sure he would raise an alarm if a full army marched through the van at night.
We have never ever closed the caravan door at night . When we first started caravanning our elder kids were teenagers and they slept in the awning . We just left door open ,same as we also never close the bedroom door at home . we also have bedroom windows open all year round , so it just never occurred to us to shut the door .even if theres nobody sleeping in the awning we still leave door open .
As you say, it's no different to sleeping in a tent so I cannot see any reason why you shouldn't leave the door open. I'm sure the dogs would alert you if someone enters your awning in the dead of night anyway.
we dont shut our bedrookm doors and leave a window open all years aswell. I like air movmnet at home. If anyone brethed near our awaning the dogs would sort them out. our Ruby scares the most experiaced whippet racer or dog handler and shesthe fisrt one you come across lol. I am not scared of the boogie man think i married and devorced him yeras ago lol

Leave it open when DD and the dog both sleeping in the awning. Shut it when we are all sleeping inside - especially when the temperature goes down to minus 6!
We went from tents to a van when the bones began to feel the cold, so we never leave the door open. The windows and rooflight can provide plenty of ventilation without the draught from an open door. But its what suits you that counts!

Leaving the bedroom door open at home is not exactly the same though as that's internal. Leaving the caravan door open is more like leaving the house front door open all night which is not my idea of security or keeping the warmth in.
Door shut in the chilly weather but windows on vent to hear dogs and provide necessary air flow anyway. In warm weather kids in awning extension and window left wide open to hear them. chair in front of zipped awning door to provide burgular trip hazzard. OH did point out that a stanley knife would make no noise anyway for a determined theif but he just a grouch.
------------- Oh am loving the tin tent after campaining against it..........I was wrong.
mine would be out of the awning in sceonds and out for a mooch looking for rabbits if they were not in there crates. There crates fitted covers over them I made and comfy beds so there all snug and warm and there jammys on if there realy cold. we ususly have the fridge running on gas and that get rely warm so the door open cools us down. even in a tent we never had any heating and that went down to -2 a few times were very warm bodys though and dont feel the cold. with the door open its only like the tent for securty

We leave the top half of the door open in warmer months when DS sleeps in the awning. In winter we're all inside & the door is shut (we're nesh). The dogs are always inside at night- they're not allowed upstairs at home so sleeping with us in the van is their treat We put their beds (just the cushion type ones) under the front double bed & they have their own night time den.
