We are booked to go on this as a couple next Saturday - now if I was going alone I would go on the Practical Towing course but as OH wants to come along and tows already and is fine with loading and everything else he's picked for us to go on just the manoeuvring course which is 1 day.  The caravan has a mover so OH feels that he would benefit from learning to reverse properly.

However, when I booked the nice lady on the phone said you both need to have at least towed for a very short period of time and can hitch and unhitch the caravan - I can't & haven't.  Told OH this and he's like yeah yeah I can show you all that (he will read this no doubt later on) so we are booked on, but I am pooping myself - its not great when you are going on a course because for some reason and unlike my usual self, I'm lacking the confidence to just tow, to then be chucked in at the deep end.

I'm thinking that we should get the caravan out and take it to a quiet area and let me have a go towing for a short distance just so I can get a feel for the weight of the caravan on the back, the feeling for the clutch & brakes etc and obviously hitch & unhitch by myself.  Nothing is ever straight forward for me!!!!  What do you think are we mad??

I would get your husband to show you how to hitch/unhitch at home. Then if you don't want to tow from home, get your husband to tow to a quiet area and have a go.  I went to an empty car park to start with, and then towed home.  I don't have a problem hitching/unhitching or just towing, but no way could I reverse into a space etc.  Thinking of doing the course myself.

Good luck.

Its a brilliant course OH and I did it a few years ago he had been towing 10 yrs and I had only had occasional go and could not go backwards! We both learnt so much. Much better to do it together as you learn and understand how to direct each other when reversing etc.

Yep, well worth doing the course, we both did it with the C and CC club years ago,

Have a go unhitching and hitching up at home, then take it for a little drive together, if you get nervous swap back, and go somewhere quitier until you feel a bit more confident.

Thanks guys I will try to persuad the OH to get the cover off and take it somewhere quiet for me to have a try otherwise I'll just worry for the next week and a half and worry that I'll slow everyone else down

I am sorrry to say there are too many people who cannot do the basics and should not be allowed on the road until they have this basic knowledge. I would welcome it as part of the driving test but that would be too impracticle.
