When you fold clothes you always use the seams and stitching for the perfect fold and you have to do the same with an awning. Lie the awning on the ground with the outside facing downwards. Fold both ends in to their seams either side then fold the base along the seam as well. Fold the awning in half width ways so the length of the awning is still visible then get the bag that the awning goes in and lie it on the ground across the awning. If the awning is too wide to fit neatly in the length of the bag then undo the last fold and fold the two sides so it fits just smaller than the bag length. When you have the correct fitment size, get on the floor and roll your body right over the length of the awning as this will press all the air out of the awning and it is this air which stops you being able to fold up the awning tight. When you have done this then you have to roll up the awning from the bulkiest end. Get your partner to roll the one side whilst you roll the other and as you go, thump the awning with the outside of your fist, this will compress the awning even more. Continue to roll the awning up till you finally get to the end. Stand the awning on one end and place the bag over the top and pull the bag down to fit just like a woman's skirt. When the bag is over half way, turn over onto opposite end and jog the awning to the bottom of the bag. Tie up the bag and the task is complete. People have laughed when I have been on rally fields when they see me rolling over the awning on the floor but when they see the final result their faces change from hilarious to absolute amazement. The only thing is you can't expect elderly people to do the same otherwise it might not just be the awning that's finally rolled over, lol.
we have never needed to roll on the awning to get the air out or thump it ?
We put the sides in so you get a tidy rectangle then fold end to the middle on each side then fold in half then roll it together from the end that you didnt fold iyswim ...hmm clear as mud !!!!
Actually I was thinking of removing the side panels myself next time and place them in the centre before folding up to see if it makes it any easier and lighter prior to folding and rolling. There will probably be less air geeting trapped as well which should make it easier.
We,have found the best way to do ours is to lay it flat on the ground, with outside of roof on the bottom fold the front on to the roof, pull the ends out to form a sort of A shape, then fold the ends in on top so every thing is folded to the same size as the roof, then fold each end into the middle and then fold in half length ways, after this fold in half a couple of times and roll up nice and tight and chuck it in its bag,job done
Mine goes back in the bag every time as well and this is the precise point I was trying to make earlier. It's air that's trapped that makes the rolled up awning much bigger and that's usually why it doesn't fit in the bag. Manufacturers won't supply a bag that is too small, it's the secret way that the awning or tent is folded away.
I bought a zipped large awning bag from bags4u
fold it with the panels out, place the curtains, then the panels and finally the awning in and zip up.
It is all ready for next time to put up
