Some sites have WiFi, most club sites have now phased it in. However, it can work out expensive. It all depends how much you want to use it and how often. I bought a dongle on the Three nework a few years ago and have only once managed to get a signal on a site. I can get internet access on my phone and my laptop can be tethered to this (though according to my network provider it can't) This gives me the option of two networks to choose from if I top the dongle up again.
However, it is quite common to have too weak a signal from any of the mobile operators to get internet access at a speed anywhere near useful.
We have a MiFi, with laptops, netbooks, iPhones, smartphones, iPods, DS's etc it was the way to go for us as up to 5 devices can be connected at one time if needed. Works out much cheaper than paying at a site.
We have the vodaphone dongle £15 just fire it up at least once in 180 days and it just waits no monthly cost but i don,t know if they are still offering this service
Dont see why sites have to charge you for wifi,it must be another add on rip off. Here at the site im on just now, its free and i think it will bring in more custom as people get to know about it.
Sites charge for WiFI because there is a cost to them in both installation and running costs that they have to pass on. Some will levy an extra charge because their pitch fees are low and some will absorb the charge as their pith fees are already high. Its then up to us campers to decide what we feel is a reasonable charge for the service we get.
Legs down kettle on, be careful when tethering a phone for internet access. The network portal is not always the same when tethering as it is when using the device on its own. For example I ahve a blackberry with unlimited internet using the Blackberry servers provided by O2. However when its tethered it uses the O2 network which is chargeable. I did this for a week and came back to a £76 bill.
The only real options are to either use the site Wifi if its your need is that great or buy a usb dongle but be prepared for a poor signal at various locations.

i use an O2 dongle pay as you go,cost £2 for 24 hours.also vodaphone dongle at £10 per month.02 is better at finding reception.found camping site cost well over the top.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
I bought a vodaphone dongle and tried it out at home...was like watching paint dry. I am sure it must work somewhere but not in my area.
I have a BT Home Hub and automatically become a member of BTFON and BTOpenzone which should mean that anytime I am near someone who is running another BT Home Hub I can pick up their signal (on a different channel).
Unfortunately even at home sat in the next room to my hub the BTFON and BTOpenzone signal is not very strong so I hate to think what the signal would be like 100 yards away.
I have a Three mobile broadband dongle, and its all or nothing as far as 3G coverage is concerned. Either you can get mobile broadband signal or you can't.
I also have a Vodafone dongle with work, and that will revert to a slower GPRS connection if it can't find 3G coverage, and so works in more locations.
I've been solely using a 3 dongle for as many years, cost for me now is £7.50 a month for 3Gb and far more than I can use.
Coverage at home is 100% and download speeds average around 1 to 2Mb, but, on my download meter, I've seen Giga bytes speeds flash up!!
When it does, whatever I'm downloading finishes in a few seconds!
I keep getting texts saying their doing work to improve the system in my area and by the speeds I'm sometimes seeing I'd say it's working.
Downside is somewhere like Skegness, here there's still a full signal but speeds a snail could outdo...with a brick tied to it's shell!
