There are car auctions but are there caravan auctions anywhere?
I have heard there is an auction called "black horse" or something like that? Can anyone tell me if they know of one? What do finance companies do with reposessed 'vans
I'm not that up on auctions never mind caravans to be honest, but a very quick google found Black Horse caravan auctions under the specialist vehicle group on this website:
Thanks friendly helpers - I had been away googling myself and lo and behold http://cav.auctionview.co.uk/QueryStock.asp I came up with the same one as you guys. Has anyone been there? Is it just dealers trying to shift stock or are there genuine bargains to be had?
It's a long way for me to travel from Aberdeen but I could incorporate in a future trip if it's a worthwhile exercise.
Would love to hear if it's any good. Record response in 20 minutes by the way - have you no beds to go to?
I too would like to know if anyone has used the auctions at Measham,Derby. It would be nice to get a bargin.,This is the address if anyone is interested. Swadlincote, Derbyshire, DE12 7DY

We are going to be looking to buy a used van,I have been on e/bay but a bit worried about buying a shed. With a budget of about 3 grand i would be devasted if i got it home and it was no good or needed lots to spend on it.I have been a follower on this site for nearly a year now,so i am picking tips up all the time.
I am sure all you guys and gals will be fed up of me when we get our van,It will be first time for us as we have been campers.

Stocky - if you are not worldly wise on caravans be careful. They can look good but be water logged. If you don't know your onions you can buy a dog. I have a B & Q Dampmeter which works well enough to give a guide, but take someone with you and look everywhere. Sometimes a private sale can be best?
You are more likely to buy a shed at auction than ebay. I don't think you can even look inside caravans at auction unless things have changed. Only BCA caravan auction is at Measham, I think. Thats wheres its always been, nobody I know who has been has been very impressed.

I don't believe thats true at all. "Black horse" is the finance company. Why would repossessed caravans be "sheds" - they just have not been paid for.
Caravan auctions I have been to (and car auctions) all have the vans/cars opened up for inspection.
BCA sell top quality motors. A few bottom of the market PX's . I would expect their caravans to be the same.

What was your opinion on the vans you have seen at auctions?Would you buy from a auction.Did they go for a cheap price?.
A friend went to Measham some while ago for a motorhome, they were all rough & prices wern't that cheap, there were caravans there as well & none were that good. Repossessions are often in a poor state, frequently damaged & dirty.
Certainly an auction is a good place to buy an ex company/lease car, they will be valeted & in good condition with service history & there will be plenty of choice at any auction. At a caravan auction you might find a bargain but you cannot guarantee good ones being there at a good price at every auction.
Presumably the op from NE Scotland would have travel 100s of miles to get to an auction & I can't see that being worth his while.

Generally repossessions are in a poor state. Folk who don't pay for caravans & motorhomes mostly don't look after them & repo men don't really repossess with care. Repos sometimes don't even have keys & their former 'owners' may have deliberatly damaged them or removed parts, folk in debt do irrational things. Repos are mostly auctioned as they come usually with no attempt to clean them up.
I know that is generalising somewhat but it is more often true than not.

I went on line last night and looked at some of the vans at Measham, they did not look dirty and they were in the range of 2005 up to 2010 vans ,from the look of the pictures their did not seem to be the damage that you are presuming,I will not make any comments untill we have been to visit ,We have said that we will go and see what it is about first before we decide where we will buy,the way i am thinking is that i have seen posts on here about people buying from dealers/ebay and private that have had a raw deals.
Went to Measham a couple of times some years ago when we were first looking at caravans. To be honest they were not that cheap, a lot of dealers there looking to buy.
I wasn't presuming damage, I was referring to repos specifically. I also was pointing out to the op it was a long way for him to go with no guarantee of finding a good 'van cheap. Certainly plenty went through today but you can't really tell condition from pictures. I doubt they were all repos anyway.
Good luck to you if you find a 'van at the right price. If you are buying a 'van without warranty you need plenty of time to inspect it very carefully.
If the op wants to register on the BCA website he can see the catalogue when it is put on the website. The next caravan auction at Measham is on't 27th.
The fact that dealers go there to buy suggests they are sold at trade prices. Dealers only buy to sell on. Dealers also generally buy good vans.
As for repossessed vans not been looked after. They may be superficially dirty from standing around but having worked in the insolvency business for 35 years my experience of people not being able to keep up payments on this type of asset is that they are more often than not decent people who have had a change of circumstances and fallen on hard times. Its not like they show on TV.
My advice would be go and have a look - it might be worthwhile.
