We've been looking for a sub-£5000 caravan in a range of dealerships from west yorks down to north derbyshire for the last month or so, and I'd say a surprisingly high proportion of them have damp or delamination, some pretty darned severe (the £4200 van we saw last week with the bouncy floor springs to mind!).

Things I've learned so far - never look at a van without a damp meter in your hand; a high proportion of dealers are very economical with the truth about the existence of damp in a van; many of the warranties "given" on lower price caravans specifically exclude damp/delamination; caravan prices are very hard to figure out or predict; and trying to make sense of the different ranges/special editions from 15-20 years ago will give you headache :-)

It's very true that you'll get a far better deal privately - it's only the fear of having absolutely no comeback if inexperience leads us into a huge mistake that's stopping us.

My Bailey Delamere Ranger 500/5 1999 is going into Read Caravans Blackburn Part ex tomorrow, they will probably price it sub £4500, it has never had damp is in lovely condition, even the curtains are immaculate, it needs a new window seal in the kitchen and two areas of floor delam, other than that it is in fabulous condition.  I hope you give it a good home, my kids have had fabulous holidays and I will be very sorry to see my old friend go.  It has had a full inspection and damp test by read  before they gave me the part ex price so I know exactly what it needs doing.

Only reason for sale - my boys are now aged 18 and now bigger than the beds!
