Time to re-insure our van again and as she's 11 years old we dont want to spend a fortune on it. Got our renewal from Adrian Flux who are charging £50 policy issue fee which seems a bit steep to me giving us a quote of nearly £150!
Some insurances are a bit of a con as I have found out recently. I had a quote from 'Caravan Guard' and although the quote was quite reasonable I wanted to spread the cost over the year on direct debit. The company they use for credit purposes wanted to do a credit search but for the sake of £90 it was daft as every time a search is applied it affects your credit score. I eventually took out my insurance £12 cheaper with 'Safeguard' via Swintons with no credit search involved. Now here's the catch. They sent a policy document to me and in black bold letters it states that "there is nothing more to do except read the details to ensure they are accurate and correct. If not contact this number and tell us imediately in order to rectify any mistakes". I did this, everything was correct and then put the document in a safe place. They charged me more when they took the second payment so I phoned up and asked why. Their reply was that I hadn't returned the credit document within 14 days so a £14 penalty charge was implemented because of this. I was told to read the document further down as it states in black and white the terms and conditions of this. Sure enough, further down the page (not in bold letters though) it states exactly that. I'm partly to blame for not reading it thoroughly but because of the penalty clause the insurance has actually cost me more. Goodbye 'Safeguard'! when it comes to renewal next year as they can stuff it right up their jacksy as far as I'm concerned. I reckon it's a tactic used by them to do cheaper insurance initially then see who falls victim to the penalty clause. Probably quite a few actually, and if there is they're making quite a few bob for not putting the the IMPORTANT details in bold letters. So anyone out there reading this beware if you are not paying in full and want to pay by monthly installments. Make sure you read ALL of it first and if you're not happy you legally have 14 days to cancel.
