Hi folks, what size gas bottle do you have in your caravan? And also how much do they cost as we have a smallish one that is not a calor one so are worried if it runs out whilst were away we won't have any Gas....
If you buy a new Calor bottle its £30 + the contents. You should get one off a tip or boot sale for a few quid. Don't matter how rusty bottle is as long as its recognisably Calor you can exchange paying only for the gas.
You need 2 bottles so you can change over when one runs out. most use 4.5 or 7.5kg sizes or the 6kg Calor lite.
Check how much gas is in your cylinder - the weight of the cylinder should be marked somewhere (in the case of Calor, for example, embossed on an aluminium collar on the top of the cylinder in pounds and ounces, so you'll need to convert this to kg) and add the figure to the weight of gas (as marked on the side, say 4.5kg for instance) then subtract the actual weight of the part-used bottle. The result will be the remaining gas.
You may be able to find a supplier for the brand you have,
otherwise you could buy a new full cylinder of Calor for the cost of the gas plus a "rental deposit" on the cylinder - keep the receipt and you should get a proportion of this back if you ever want to return the bottle without exchanging for a refill.
There are less expensive, possibly free, ways of obtaining an empty cylinder - some people actually take these to recycling centres where the concientious operatives promptly lock them inside a cage (the bottles, not the people!) but if you could legally park on the approach road to the tip with a "Calor bottles wanted" sign in your window...
I am not sure of what sort of caravaning you do, just seasonal or all year round.
One thing to also remember if you are going to change bottle type is that Calor gas will start to give you problems at around 4 Deg C and below, so if you caravan in colder weather it may pay you to think about changing to two 6Kg Propane bottles (the red ones) which does not freeze up,(well it has not for us in - 15 deg conditions).
We have 2 x 6kg Propane and at present typicaly pay around £18.00 each a refill depending on where we get it, BUT as with all gas it also depends on the oil prices which also effects gas prices.

Would two bottles not make the front of the van too heavy? I've got a Bailey Ranger 500 5, Thanks in advance!!
we have a bailey 500/5 and carry two calorlite bottles where as we could only carry one of the heavy type.the weight of a calorlite bottle full is 10 kgs or 22 lbs.use only calor if you intend to visit club sites as this is the only dealer they use and will NOT change any other if you run out.as said start on red bottle for all year round use without worry of not gassing due to cold weather,we had that once and no breakfast was made.with the spare wheel and two gas bottles the nose weight is 90 kgs.

I carry 1 6kg & 1 11kg propane in the front locker. No problem! The 6kg is backup. the cost of gas in small cylinders is so high. It cost £22 for the 11kg while a 19kg would have been £26. You can use 11kg on a winters weekend.
Hi Hacksaw Bob,, your quote....".There are less expensive, possibly free, ways of obtaining an empty cylinder - some people actually take these to recycling centres where the concientious operatives promptly lock them inside a cage (the bottles, not the people!) but if you could legally park on the approach road to the tip with a "Calor bottles wanted" sign in your window... ", Not at my local recycling place, there they lock up the caravaners ,till they get in some gas bottles in, (must be there beer )money.
------------- If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
If in Doubt Check it Out.

Hi Kev
Not 100% sure but your Ranger 500/5 MTPLM is 'I think' about 1.316 Kg very near my Ranger GT60 520/4 of 1.326Kg. The only other thing in my front locker is a plastic bucket and plastic levelling wedges, we see no differance in towing with the two 6 Kg Propane bottles both in towing and MPG.
We do however keep the waste container in the back locker and other bits and pieces, I would think your C-Max would not have any problems towing.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
