Hi everyone, Im currently loading the van for the first trip later today. When I put the camping chairs and crate of food/drink  over the axle, do I need to tie them to something? Also we have the waste container under the fixed bed together with the porch awning is that safe there? Gas bottle in front locker with water barrel. any other tips for loading greatly appreciated. thanks

Heavy objects low down and either over or slightly behind the caravans axel, they dont need to be tied down, but they can be wedged together to prevent rolling ect, we use cushions, pillows, fleeces, for this job, also a pack of car washing sponges from the pound shop are used to protect the sides of boxes from rubbing along the caravans internal fixtures and risking any marks from the vibrations during travel.

Personally i would have packed the awning over the axel too, especially if its one of the heavier type, or at least the heavy poles there and then the flysheet under the bed. The best thing is to pack it, then measure the hitch weight on either a purpose made gauge or a pair of good bathroom scales, then compare this to what your cars max allowed weight is, normally its around 75kg for most models of car, but anything beween 50kg to 100kg can be found.

Lightweight foodstuffs such as pasta, cerials, crisps, biscuits ect can go straigt into a overhead locker, just make sure that you close it firmly, most people only take enough food to last them for 24hrs, then stock up when they arrive on site, either from the local shops (we love the farm shops for this) or by finding the nearest supermarket.

I hope you have a really good time, and good luck with your new found hobby, the only thing is it can be very addictive, we often book a week and end up staying for a fortnight we like it so much!

Agree with above post. we wedge everything so it can't move but put all tins and awning over axle and all beer and wine in the car. Good luck it is just common sense.
