We bought an 18 month old van a few years ago and after great depreciation we ended up with negative equity ,now we have seen our same van for sale several times ,for more than we paid for it years ago ? :O

Yeah I know about seasonal peaks and troughs but we have noted that the van we bought over 3 years ago is now worth more than we bought it for :O
Every single decent van we saw was substantially over list price, routinely by as much as £1000 to £1500 on 5-8 year old vans. We have paid over price for the van we have a deposit on and the dealer was honest about it telling us how much over it was and that they can do it as that is what customers will pay at the moment.
Caravanning, by tradition, does very well in a recession...ask any dealer. So they will be quite high in price at the moment.

I see Hammond is trying to distance himself from the anti-caravan theme of Top Gear. He's "written" two books "about" the subject, and has apparently bought a new motorhome recently. He's always been into camping.
As for prices, new caravans are being snapped up and there's a big demand for good used vans. Not many deals to be done (for the popular models, at least) as lots of people are paying full price.

Long gone are the days of the dealers selling off second hand vans for around £500 - £1000, or are they all putting them on Ebay in order to get better prices in the auction format?
Our Daughter and partner just bought a good van from Ebay for £650, now on a site and I tested all the electrics, gas 12volt etc and all working great, very minor reading on the damp meter which was in the gas locker at the front so all in all a bargain. Had all the extras too which are worth what they paid for the van on their own!
There are still some good buys around if you buy privately. If you don't mind travelling you can save as much as 50% on dealer prices buying privately.

HOORAY!
Been looking for just such a van and this thread was worrying me. Now I feel a little better.
There are some right munters out there on fleabay. I've seen ads for vans from the early 90's that have untested heaters, pumps, electrics, faulty cookers, damp patches and the pictures shopw the van being used as shelter accomodation for transients... Prices? Nearly a grand!
I'm hoping that given enough time, the right van will ctrop up for me. Too late for our tenting holiday that starts a week on Wednesday.... SWMBO is getting cold feet about the weather now, so the pressure is ON.
