Got a phone call tonight from our seasonal pitch site to tell me our awning is trashed. The wind here in Scotland was mental yesterday and the site done their utmost to rescue the contents and protect the van. No damage to the van fortunately, and the awning contents all looked okay. I've now put all the contents into the van for safe keeping. Unfortunately that's this weekend with the kids and cousins trashed but at least no one was hurt. Fair play to site for their efforts. Storm strap never stood a chance! lol!
I've got 5C's insurance through the CC which looks like I'm covered for the awning during a storm.
It's been ages since I've posted! Good to be back!
Sorry to hear that, hope you get that sorted with the insurers. Sounds like a good site.
We had trouble taking our awning down on Sunday in strong winds (a helpful neighbour rescued us), what concerned me most was it ripping off the awning rail - has anyone had this happen/heard of this happening?
OH is still saying 'told you we should have taken it down the day before'.....to which I reply 'and if it was windy the day before...'
Surely that will have strained the rail? I'm sure that's the reason for a lot of damp in caravans. There's an awful lot of power in a flapping awning. It doesn't have to rip it off the van, it just has to ease it in one or two places to let water in.
I would check the seal around the rail after an incident like that. If, of course I used an awning in the first place.
Good luck with the insurance. We have just gone through ours for a new awning and damage to the van. Take photos of all the damage, you will need 2 quotes for the awning and 2 quotes for any repairs.
Ours happened when we took the awning down may bank holiday. Nightmare.

This was up in the usually sunny St. Andrews Jeff. Two out of the four seasonal were trashed, the two survivors were shielded by the vans themselves.Â
Was it that site which is on a hill and next to the beach,if so i remember years ago it was hit at the start of a season and there was a caravan blown over and a lot of damage to awnings etc..never mind you might get a brand new awning out of it.
Seriously, last year we had a fantastic season weather wise. St. Andrews is normally a micro climate. The RAF don't fly out of there on QRA for having bad weather.
The awning rail is steadfast. No damage to the van, very lucky indeed. With a family of four on a seasonal pitch an awning is essential I would say.
Unfortunately in my haste to rescue the contents of the awning the place got tidied up and the awning chucked in the bin. This may be my insurance downfall. But at the time I had no idea I was covered and things were a bit fraught!
The Insurance company are playing funny buggers already so I'll let you know how it goes. I've ordered a replacement already as I'm not wasting my seasonal pitch time on some insurance company too'ing and fro'ing. Here's to our wee but n' ben!
personally i think all awning s should be taken down wen caravan not occupied .heath and safety issue....flying poles damage to other caravans .. all the rubbish people have in them as well ..but hey ho . at least they not too dear plenty on ebay ....
