I recently exchanged my Caravan and went through the usual money for old rope of paying £12 for a CRIS document, it was during this process i enquired with the operative about my daughters stolen caravan (this was stolen 12 months ago just after purchase and was not insured) i asked the operative if they receive a call to register my daughters stolen caravan what is the procedure, to my horror the reply was "we inform the caller that there is a problem with the caravan and cannot register" that was it!!! i asked do you not take details from the caller etc. so a trace can begin call the police etc etc "no all we do is pass a message through to the admin dept whom will notify your daughter by post an enquiry was made against the caravan"....Well wouldnt that be really helpful!

If you have a stolen caravan don’t expect Cris scheme to assist in its return!!!

CRIS is only a company that just keeps a register and that's it basically. Any involvement with stolen property such as a caravan has to be dealt with the legal authorities such as the Police etc. The Police can apply via CRIS for any necessary details they need should they require it for recovery of a stolen caravan. You just pay the £12 for the administration fee which they will then put the data on record accordingly.

The boot could be put on the other foot though. If you went out and bought a second hand caravan and the seller simply went and reported it stolen to CRiS you would be the one arrested for stealing it and the caravan would be returned to the previous owner who also has your money.

Tango55, below is an extract from HPI website that applies to Cars, this would be expectation for caravans would it not?

What if my HPI Check shows a problem?

If the car you want to buy turns out to have an undesirable history, the next steps you take will depend on the problem that is uncovered. Here are examples of potential problems and what actions could be taken next.

Stolen vehicle

If the vehicle comes up as stolen, you should not proceed with the purchase unless HPI can give you the all clear. We will contact the police to check whether they need to take any action and then let you know what will be happening.

LegsDownKettleOn:   Not if you had a receipt to prove that you purchased the caravan in good faith. Once again it would be a Police matter as the seller would be committing fraud. If you were gullible enough not to ask for a receipt on purchase then you would expect to get conned by your own misfailings.

You would undoubtedly be questioned and the bill of sale/receipt would help prove your innocence of theft but the caravan would still be returned to the rightful owner- probably the previous owner's insurers.

£12 for a Chris registration seems reasonable to me.

I don't think a receipt would help at all. It wouldn't mean you own the van. You can't pass on title to something you don't own.

Guys, thanks for all the input around legality of ownership, the point i am trying to get across is how Cris respond to an attempted registration of a stolen caravan in comparison to a stolen car, my daughter is left with a blue strip of paper it may as well not mean anything if cris dont respond!

Yep, that's why I sent them an e-mail to say I have bought a 'van but as they are older 'vans I won't pay the £12 - why should I?  I keep the cris reg doc and pass on when I sell it - after that it's up to the new owner.

I suppose if it was stolen I could register it but older vans are not the same target for thieves.
