Hi All, Thanks for your comments. Now with the reference of this thread getting to personal, I will only say this, and make no further comment on the matter, this thread was made personal by the initial idiotic and obnoxious first remark, suggesting that I drive and noisy into other cars, and not pay enough attention to my driving, (That is Total Rubbish), if my post was interpreted or misunderstood by the posters derogatory remark, let me make it simpler to understand. The driver of the Camper van was driving in an unusual driving position, (Thought driver ill) and it was this that caught my attention, and a quick glance, (you would need to have blinkers on not to notice), The long enough look was a quick glance, about 1sec, and no cars in front of van or my car for ½ mile, the head turn was no more than you would do to see into off side driving mirror. As to the remark about giving Caravaner’s bad press, that is idiotic, it is the bad Caravaner’s that do by their actions when towing, and tars the rest of the good caravaner’s with the same brush, and give the well known TV personality the ammo to shoot us all down. To the Non caravaner, caravans/motorhomes/trailer tents campervan, are all lumped into one category, and any incident involving any one of them reflects on us all, If the observation is taken as whinging or whining on the forum, and helps to eradicate the bad practices then that will help to eradicate the bad press. This has now got me thinking, how many member have not posted a comment or observation on this forum, because of personal derogatory remarks, Please do not start a war over this, I have said my peace and that is an end to this, and will not enter into any personal dialogue on this matter. Sorry this was so long, and thanks again. PS, The VW type campervan was like small version of motor home newish type not old type VW aamper van.

I apologize. I mistakenly thought that you were driving whilst looking through other peoples windows. Obviously you were in the passenger seat and therefore had no need to be aware of what was going on ahead or in your mirrors.

Good god.  Apology - yeah ok.  Obviously you're not apologising at all, just being sarcastic which really isn't helping the impression you created by your original unpleasant posts.

If anyone genuinely believes that the driver of a vehicle can't glance to the side briefly & take in what's there to be seen without also being aware of what's going on ahead & behind you -  then it worries me that you're driving on public roads.

John please don't apologise for the length of your post - you're obviously just trying to be reasonable -  sadly with some people there's no point -  but at least for the rest of us you've stated your case & showed you're a reasonable man who gets worried by dangerous driving  -  and also does not resort to insults when  other people have differing ideas to yourself.

If people are truly concerned about preserving the ethos of helpful advice for caravanners on these forums I think they would be less unpleasant & more friendly - like John & Murano & the majority of peopl who have been so helpful to me since I joined UKCS.

Can't be bothered with this one any more myself.   Sorry your thread was turned sour John, but certainly not down to you.

Agree John even if one person takes note and think perhaps I should pull over and read map, eat crisps use the phone ect, then it's one less dangerous driver on the road.
Thankyou for your topic John ( although slightly soured ) it may make someone think first :)

I thought caravanners were supposed to be relaxed and care free....What a bunch of whining moaners seem to be contributing to this thread.

Jeez mate - are you like this in real life?  I thought you'd just accidentally expressed yourself badly in your Grumpy Old Man post in a previous thread, but I'm starting to think that perhaps tetchy  is your default setting - chill, mister, before your blood pressure rockets

And it's perfectly possible to glimpse what your fellow road users are doing as you drive.  Any driver should be aware of what is going on not just to the front of them, but to the sides and the rear as well.  Obviously, taking in a 360 view of the road means you'll see through both your nearside and offside windows.  If you're only looking out of the front window, you are not driving in an aware and responsible fashion. It'd be a tunnel vision driver that couldn't drive at 65 and cope with turning their head briefly to check no idiot has decided to undertake/come down the slip road at 90 miles an hour/ride a motorbike up your inside....

And, whilst I'm on a roll, FWIW no-one needs to read a map whilst driving.  Pull over, check where you're going, set off again, repeat until you are at destination.  Reading and driving are two non-compatable activities! As are reading and texting, And reading and having a blazing row with your passenger, complete with shoving and fist waving) as demostrated by the couple behind me yesterday on Leeds Ring Road at 70mph).

John, many thanks for your original post, such a shame some people cannot seem to help themselves, and are so rude. LegsDownKettleOn, if you cannot resist posting unpleasant and provocative or non-constructive comments, then please do not post at all

Thanks

Ian

HI

I think there is no excuse for reading, eating or anything else at all whilst driving, but when I was younger and on the road alot as a service engineers I used to smoke roll ups and would often drive along the motorway and hold the steering wheel with my knees whilst rolling a fag.  Now, I would not do this these days as I think having kids has made me realise that I shouldn't be endagering other people.

I also knew a lady that used to dry her hair by leaning over the vents on the way into work every morning.  She may even still do this, who knows!!

Its like everything else in life, common sense should tell you that doing these things are going to potentially cause harm to someone.

It's good to moan sometimes so good thread even if it's not what you intended.

Cheers

Richard
