I suppose it'll vary depending on how cold it is, how damp the atmosphere is, how many people are in the 'van at once, and also how much you sweat. Picnic blanket didn't stop the damp for us I'm afraid. A towel or cardboard would absorb the moisture but might still cause the mattress to sort of lap it back up I'd think.
All the same I think an awful lot of us have this problem but in most cases the seats haven't actually been ruined (not in the short term anyway) so don't worry too much Scot.
