Hi guys, i have been adjusting my caravan brakes this evening and have a few questions if anyone can answer.

I have undone the hand brake, spun the wheel in the forward direction and adjusted the brakes via a bolt on the back of the hub until the wheel was locked, then i slackened it off a couple of turns so it spun freely. I have noticed that when i am driving along and brake, the handbrake lever moves a notch or two and stays there, is this normal? also in the below picture this is with the brake on when standing still, does this look ok?

Here is a link to the brake lever:   http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/818/photooek.jpg/

Thanks for any replies
Ian

Sounds like you have backed the adjuster off a bit too far, but the picture is not a system I am familiar with. It is not normal for a hand brake to pull itself up though.

so do you mean i need to apply a little more adjusting? I have read the instructions for al-ko brake setup and it states in there that the lever should be at a 90 degree angle when applied.

Do you have a button hand brake , or a button less one .

This is how i understand the brake system to work .
With a button one you need to add a bit of force to make the hand brake point straight up , the reason for this is, the force compresses the spring cylinder ( also called energy tube ), the spring cylinder stores energy to ensure the hand brake still functions should the caravan roll backwards , normally when the wheels rotate backwards the brakes are released ( eg when reversing ) , the spring cylinder over comes the reversing effect and reapplys the brakes.
With a button less hand brake the spring force is done by a compressed strut .

If your hand brake is moving a couple of clicks when towing i would have thought your break away cable is a little tight , or the handbrake is catching the fairing .

Did you re-check the adjustment of the spring cylinder gap after doing the brake drum adjustment .
