We've just arrived home from a lovely week in Worcestershire but had some worries towing.

We changed the car & van in January & towed the van home 130 miles with no problems.  Since then the towball accumulated some surface rust that we cleaned as per advice on an earlier thread.  But we had an awful creaking sound coming from the hitch area on the way down last week - fine on the motorway but noisy when pulling away & on smaller roads.

When we arrived on site (after stopping several times & worrying all the way) the warden heard the noise & immediately said there must still be some muck on the towball.  So we cleaned it really throroughly again before heading home.  But the noise was still there along with a squeaking sound when going over bumps.

We had a detachable towbar fitted when we bought the car & the van has a Winterhoff hitch.  Can anyone say what might be causing these noises?  Is it just that we haven't cleaned it enough?  Or OH thinks the 'pads' in the hitch might need replacing?  Or could it be the towbar that needs checking?  Thank you!!!!!!!

The creaking thing is almost certainly a bit of muck on the pads. Maybe as well to get these replaced if they are contaminated......Mick

It is difficult to diagnose problems from descritions of noises -- but my advice is that the very least you should do is have your towbar and mountings checked.  Personally I dont like detachable towbars--somehow it goes against the grain with something so important but still thats me!

Thanks for the replies.  We did think about trying to find someone with a towbar who could hitch up to our van & pull it a few feet (the creaking starts when setting off).  If it still does it we'll know it's something to do with the hitch & if it doesn't we'll know it's the towball/bar.  Problem is we can't think of anyone we could ask.  Debating whether to ask the owner of the storage site - if we offer to pay for his time he might do it for us...

I have had the AlKo stabiliser hitch groan a bit when the caravan is first hitched up, but it usually stops after the first few bends. I certainly wouldn't rule out the possibility that something is loose or worn on the car or on the caravan. I would try towing with a different vehicle and / or try towing a different trailer if possible to see if you can find a link.

I'm not familiar with the Winterhoff. Is it possible to hitch up securely without engaging the stabiliser pads? That could give some indication as to the problem.

Use brake cleaner on the towball and then clean inside the stabiliser, ckean with a lint free cloth. This did the trick on mine. Its amazing how quick they get contaminated with dust.

Don't pay for anyone to tow it a few feet ask on here there must be someone living in Manchester that can pop round and give it a little tow for you, if I lived closer I wouldn't hesitate.

Hi we had this last week too!  OH had a new automatic towbar fitted but the ball didn't come with a cover so when we towed it to Great Yarmuouth we noticed it creaking - we guessed it was a contaminated tow ball and intended to clean it before we set off to Evesham the following week but forgot.  It was much much worse on the trip to Evesham, really noisy, certainly got everyones attention when we arrived on site ahem!!  OH cleaned the tow ball with brake and clutch cleaner and also replaced the side pads and also cleaned the front and rear pads (you can probably tell which pads are contaminated by the marks on the tow ball).  Anyway although it creaked at first when he set off from Evesham it had cleared by the time we got home so hopefully thats now sorted and of course we also bought a tow ball cover. Sounds like you may also need to replace some of the pads and wow they are expensive for what they are!!

Fiona - sounds exactly the same!  & yes, they're expensive too...  We used brake & clutch cleaner on it all but was no better coming home - we got a few funny looks pulling into services.
