We're new to caravvanning, had one weekend away and I thought I'd remembered to do everything on our return home. Its been sat locked up on the drive for 3 weeks, yesterday my sister in law came round for a nosey and when we went in there was a funny smell but I couldnt work out where it was coming from. Today I went in to put a few things back in the cupboards and thought I'd check if the smell was coming from the fridge. To be horror I doscovered moudly food in the freezer and the smell opening the freezer compartment was and still is foul. I've emptied the freezer of its disdgusting contents cleaned it all out, opened the windows and door and am just hoping this works as the smell goes away.
Anything else I can do and please tell me I'm not the only one whos done this

use an good anti bacterial spray in abundance and leave for an hour or two.then clean with the same bottle only using a rag to wipe all over. i use fenwicks fendox for fridge and toilet.
If it's really smelly and you've given it a good clean, shake some baking powder or bicarb of soda into two open tupperware boxes - stand it one in the freezer compartment and one in the fridge and just leave it to absorb the smell. For added smell improvement, chop up a lemon and stick that in there too. It's what I was told to do twenty odd years ago when I had a temp job cleaning student flats - they never emptied their kitchens and you don't even want to guess what those fridges smelt like after they'd been left off for a month or so in the summer!!
thanks both, will get some of the cleaner as off to Attwoolls to return something and we have bicarb of soda so will do that as well. Just been back in there and it reeks still.

Cat litter and bicarbonate , that will absorbe even the most pungent smells , and then a good clean out with an antibacterial agent.

The road can be tough and rough, but what you put in you get back 10 x more.
I've done it. Left some sliced ham or cheese over winter. Not sure which it was as when I found it it was sliced green stuff. I washed it out with vinegar which over powered the smell followed by Mr Muscle kitchen cleaner. Seemed to clear the worst of the smell quickly and the rest cleared after a few days.
a friend of mine left 2 chicken breasts in the freezer---for 4 weeks!! u can imagine how lovely they were when she found them!!

Hi savanne1, no your not the only one, even when nothing in fridge, and door is closed it will smell, remember to leave the fridge door on the inner of the two holes at top of fridge to allow fridge to air,or just wedge it open a few inches.
------------- If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
If in Doubt Check it Out.

It's so easily done, and most us have done something similar. After a time you devize a system. The problem comes because when you move the van the fridge door needs to be shut. When you take it back to storeage, then the fridge door needs to be left open, so 'scof' - shut curtains, open fridge - the last thing we do before locking the van and leaving it. (Wife's job)
The other error which we have made (and you only ever do it once) is forgetting to empty the toilet. (My job)
Another one is draining the water system over winter. We now do this everytime we move the van, but it's easier on this van than it was on the very old van we had. (Wife's job)
Another one is gas. Our storeage site insist that we disconnect gas cylinders. We now do this eveytime we move the van, as a matter of course. (My job)

fridge fine now, the bicarbonate of soda worked a treat. Trouble is the fridge is now the least of our probs with the van.
Try not to worry, Savanne. I think your idea for an upgrade swap is one they might go for.
