hi advice needed going over to france in july i am currently with mayday but i need european cover to cover my car & caravan for 16 days been looking at red pennant plus britannia would appreciate any advice .
Can't speak for Brittania, but we have had excellent service from Red Pennant in the past, including the year our car was recovered back to the UK from the S. Alps area of France and they dropped of a Disco for us with the correct tow bar etc for us to use for the remainder of our holiday and to travel home. They are not the cheapest, but I would thoroughly recommend them.
its my first time taking my caravan abroad so i am more concerned about the standard of cover rather than the cost its good to know that you got excellent service from red pennant.

keith.
If cost is not an issue, then I would go with Red Pennant, no contest. I've only quoted one instance, but we have called them out many times when we have been on France. It's good to have someone on the end of the 'phone who can translate French/English fluently too. Many time have I been at a garage and have asked the garage to ring Red Pennant. I explain on the phone what I want to say, then pass the phone to the garage people, Red Pennany explain to them in French etc. I have had some quite detailed conversations this way, passing the 'phone backwards and forwards for translation. Before Red Pennant we went with the RAC, which we found to be good too (but not as good as Red Pennant). Just my opinion.
I would recomend red pennant ! We used a private company once, had a breakdown, in France, and the insurance company found a 1000 excuses why they would not pay out. I cant remember the name of the company, but we booked them through Eurocamp Independent--never again!

------------- there are 10 types of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't.
I cannot speak highly enough of Europ Assist for both health & breakdown cover. They saved our bacon during a dire emergency in Spain. I purchased this cover as "caravan & camping club" insurance. They played no part in the rescue. Next time I'd certainly buy direct.
Red Pennant are fab. We even used them solo in France once (no caravan) My car key broke in the lock when we were as far south in France as you can go. Red Pennant contacted my then landlord, the landlord got a spare key from my house, which was then biked to me the following day. Red Pennant payed for everything, including taxi fees, extra nights accomodation and motorway tolls.
On another occasion, on one of those nighmare holidays where everything that can go wrong went wrong, they couldn't have been more helpful and were the most reassuring voice to my stressed, and rather ill parents and got us home.
we have normal RAC for this country but is it likely to work much cheaper to do it with them by entending what we have or just book for red pennant for the one off trip. Not looking to save loads and would do Red P if it still costly with RAC too
Sorry, I have to disagree
Every year I pay about £40 with vehicle rescue direct for 14-16 days cover to France.
They dont pay for parts (most policies only pay a very small amount for parts and labour anyway) however, when my clutch went in france they paid for
Breakdown truck to pick me up and take me and caravan to campsite
campsite for 10days whilst clutch fixed (IT was august and was a very rare car)
breakdown truck to come back for car and take it to main suzuki dealers an hour away
Car hire - courtesy car
And all phone calls were in english, they rang and sorted everything themselves.
Taxi to the suzuki dealers an hour away to pick the car up.
When you are on your own with 3 kids in the isolated wheatfields of france at 8pm on a saturday night in the middle of nowhere then you really find out what good service you get.
For less than £40!
R P charge according to the days away. It is counted from the day you leave home to the day you arrive back home. I think it is segments of e.g. 30 - 40 days etc.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
