Come off at Cribbs Causeway Bristol (Jn 21 I think) left at the lights and left again into Asda. Go to the far end of the carpark by the cliff walls (far right as you look at it) Used to overnight there with an artic lorry.....never any problems. about 2 hours to destination in the morning and a cafe for the cheap Brekkie before setting off
Asda Cribbs Causeway is junction 17, bit busy there all hours these days due to Asda being 24 hours & youngsters hanging around the mall into the small hours. You'll also find laybys with no problem, if J18 of the M4 is far enough down for you, you can come off at J18 & turn left or right & you'll find big laybys on both sides within a few hundred yards of the junction.
It depends what time you're thinking of sleeping until, you might be better off getting past J19 M5 (south of the Avon Bridge) if you intend sleeping until late because this junction tends to be the south end of the bottleneck at peak times.

I wouldn't think you'd hit much traffic just yet Woofers, it tends to be hectic at Whitsun then goes a bit quiet until the first lot of schools break for the summer. Then it's solid for miles from the Avon bridge back up through the M5/M4 interchange but it shouldn't happen just yet.
We've arrived at services in the early hours and parked up and slept, also have done the same at a lorry park. Both were ok, we had no problems.
This summer we're off to Somerset and luckily hubby has 1 days holiday left so we've booked a site half way and will leave on the Friday, chill out on site and then finish journey next day. Not done it this way before so we'll see how it works out, regarding traffic. Don't know what time to leave site on the Saturday morning though. I'm thinking we'll need to be off pretty early.

Good to know about the services and parks thanks. Would be ideal to go a day early and then make your way leisurely to main campsite but no can do this time.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
