Hi All,

I have managed to fire up my boiler, when it gets hot the water comes out of the expansion tank, i have taken the pipe of the pump and the water is just trickling out of the top of the pump. Should there be a good flow of water from the pump when boiler is fired up? I am thinking the pump is not working please let me know you thoughts. Many thanks

Sorry

I don't understand what you mean.

Is the water system full?
Is it a submersable pump?
Do you have cold water at the taps?
Is the pump in the aquaroll?

You should have cold water flow from hot and cold taps without the water heater working.

What is the expansion tank you mention?

Steve

Hi Steve,

Yes i have cold water at all taps, boiler is fired up but the water is coming out of the water tank next to the boiler were you put the water in for the heating/water system, the system is a wet system. Water system is full with anti freeze and water. But pump for pushing the water round the heating system does not seem to be working.

You have an Alde system. First, do you have the instructions? Have you checked if you are operating it correctly?

You should get hot water if you fill the water system and turn on the boiler. The pump should only run if you want central heating. To get this you need to set the temperature higher than the ambient temperature showing on the display.

Have you selected gas or electric operation?

If the header tank is overflowing, the system is over-filled.

http://www.alde.co.uk/manuals.php

Your system is an earlier one than ours, but if you know your boiler model, you can download the instructions from Alde. Or look at them all till you find your one.

The "lightning" symbol is mains electricity operation on ours, and we select 1 or 2 Kw. The "drips" sound like the symbols for gas.

But your best plan is to identify the boiler and read the manual.

If it works OK you should have no problem getting the CH going too, and it is an excellent system.

Good luck!

Just a thought.....

If you don't find your boiler there, then it may be a "Primus" boiler.

Primus was taken over by Alde and they still supply spares, so may be able to assist you with instructions.

They are not good at responding to e mails in our experience, so suggest you ring them.

Just seen your threads over in "repairs", so it is indeed a Primus system. Alde may still be able to help, also check out what Gary said on that link.

Hope you have success!

I think this is your boiler? Page 11.

Operating instructions seem to apply to all models.

I can help with translation if required, if you cannot find instructions in English.

OK, seems you probably need pump to be working, it's a totally different system from the present-day Alde.

I have passed the details to OH, who understands Swedish perfectly, and he will come back and give you some info/ask some questions, so he can understand your system better.

Oh, Thank you very much jennifer, i do appriciate it, instructions on how to use the heating and water would be great. I was told everything worked when i bought the caravan but it now seems this was not right, the boiler would not fire up so i had to do some wiring and now fires up, i also have managed to work out the pump was not working by disconnecting the top hose of the pump, then i disconnected the pump and tested it on the battery and nothing. So quite proud of myself so far. Not bad for a women hey. But unfortunatly our first trip out in the caravan all these problems didn't go down so well with the other half, so would love to have everything in working order so i can tempt him to going away again, once the heating and water is up and running i can look at how to put the awning up. All good fun though.

Hello alleycath1, my oh has located a manual for the Primus system you have in your caravan, and if the installation is as described therein, then I have the following questions/comments which may help to solve your problems:
1. Is the boiler located in the front locker?
2. Is there a separate switch for the circulation pump?
3. For the water to be heated by the boiler, the circulation pump must work.
4. The mains heating cartridge, which can be set to 1 or 2 kW, may be a separate unit, therefore if that is the case, again the circulation pump must operate to be able to get hot water.
5. If the mains heating cartridge is fitted within the hot water hot water tank, then hot water does not rely on the circulation pump working.
6. For central heating the circulation pump must work.
7. If there a 3-way mixer valve on the central heating pipes(22mm diameter), this is to regulate the relative flow between wall radiators an floor heating element.
8. There may be a shut-off valve for the wall radiators.
9. Most important, make sure the water circulation system is vented properly. There should be vent-valves fitted to all high-points in the system. As you have described, when you fire up the system, the expansion tank overflows
, this would indicate too much fluid in the system, or air in the system.
10. When you "fire up", is this using gas or mains electricity.
11. Is the condition of your 12V battery good, and does the battery charger work. The circulation pump will not work without 12V electricity.

With your comments to the above it may be possible to suggest a solution.

Hi Jennifer,

I will try and answer the questions here goes.

1. Is the boiler located in the front locker? Yes
2. Is there a separate switch for the circulation pump? No
7. If there a 3-way mixer valve on the central heating pipes(22mm diameter), this is to regulate the relative flow between wall radiators an floor heating element. pipes to pump are 22mm.
8. There may be a shut-off valve for the wall radiators. Yes there is and i have turn't it on.
9. Most important, make sure the water circulation system is vented properly. There should be vent-valves fitted to all high-points in the system. As you have described, when you fire up the system, the expansion tank overflows
, this would indicate too much fluid in the system, or air in the system. That is what i thought but with the pump not circulating the water quick anoth the tank is filling up from the return and not going out quick enoth.
10. When you "fire up", is this using gas or mains electricity. Using gas and mains.
11. Is the condition of your 12V battery good, and does the battery charger work. Yes i have a good battery and the charger is working

The circulation pump will not work without 12V electricity.
