Why can you not run off the lesiure battery? on our Thetford fridge all 12v does is maintain the temperture that the fridge is already at provided you have cooled it down first and your meat is already refrigerated. You lesiure battery would get recharged on your jaunt through France. Surley your car electrics is only doing the same and keeping the fridge maintaind or am i incorrect.

You are incorrect. You cannot run the fridge off your leisure battery as it would soon lose its' charge. The car battery is always being recharged when you are on the move. There is no facility in caravans to run the fridge off the leisure battery only 240 volts or gas.

Went from Sailsbury C&CC (ehu) to an airfield to watch my wife skydive (at airfileld for 5hrs) then onto Dorset another hour. Only have single electrics on car which operates the indicators and brake lights on van. By switching my fridge to a 12v position i was able to maintain the temperature inside the fridge for 6 hrs. Inside the fridge was meat, ham cheese, milk and ice cubes in the freeze all cold. On checking the charge it had hardly moved.

IF your fridge did run off the caravan battery then your caravan is wired wrong & if your car only has a black 12n connection then there is no fridge or charging supply to the van
oooh Savanne that's so close to where I live, I'm just outside Fareham so it's only a quick drive to the port. I hope you enjoy your first tow in your lovely new caravan to France - lets keep our fingers crossed for lots of sunshine.

Luggage trolleys are available for a £1.00 deposit. 516 spaces. The maximum height for vehicles in the car park is 2.2m high. Payment for the car park is made upon exit.

You are right Mrs Anorak BUT the port has been re-designed and we went 4 Sundays ago and it was utter chaos. The row of caravans waiting to board was almost out on the main road and there was definitely nowhere to park.
I use the port a lot as we live locally and sent an email to the port authority after we had boarded. Needless to say I did not receive a reply. There is a new terminal, which was opened with a flourish a couple of months ago but the relevant facilities where not completed.
I complained to the Condor staff at the check in and they suggested I wrote as they where also fed up. We had to squeeze our caravan through a very small space as we approached the check in.
I suspect that they may have altered it now after having received so many complaints but having said that, it is not the best place to spend the first night of your holiday when there are quite a few sites in the area.
Oh.... I saw that they'd built a new terminal and wondered if they had made the waiting area smaller.
When we've booked the 8am ferry we've tended to arrive around midnight and there's only a few people parked up in the lanes, mainly caravans. Then they've opened check-in about 2 hours before the sailing so we've never seen what happens with the queue as we've moved through to the next waiting area by then. Its probably not the best place for an overnight stay but then we prefer to be at the port rather than lie awake somewhere worrying about missing the ferry..but then maybe we worry too much
Well...I was in the same predicament a couple of weeks ago ahead of our overnight sailing to St. Malo.
We'd had the caravan fridge on for 24 hours before we left to get it down to temp, then put all our frozen meat in the freezer. Of course during the drive to Portsmouth it was no problem as it was powered by the car, but we worried about it all defrosting during the 12 hour crossing. Anyway, when I checked it on arrival at our campsite the following afternoon, about half a cm of meat at the very top was very slightly thawed, and I mean VERY slightly, just on the tips of the meat. I just left them in the freezer and they were absolutely fine.
However, we also took Waeco chest fridge and I'd put a weeks worth of frozen meat in there too. It was powered by the 12v in the car on the way down, but just like the caravan fridge, was without power during the 12 hour sailing. On checking the meat the following day we were absolutely astounded to find that it was all rock solid - even my ice-cubes were frozen solid and they were at the top of the fridge.
We ended up having meat for the whole 12 nts and only bought fresh veg & dairy produce in France!
