Now that we are spending 2-4 months abroad, the problem of gas cylinder exchange is more important.
While we normally run as much as possible on EHU to conserve gas, we have found this is not ideal since many sites only provide a 6 amp EHU, and where it is frequently 16 amp, e.g. in Germany, the supply is usually metered. With sites charging anything from 55 to 85 euro cents per kwh, it soon mounts up, especially when running the heating.
So we would like to be able to use more gas without having to worry about the refill situation.
Looking on the Gaslow website we have found that our nearest installer is almost 1 hour from here, and not in an area we pass often, so not easy to pop in and get prices.
Has anyone had such a system fitted, how have you got on with it (pros and cons), and a rough idea of the cost would be good?
I was recently quoted £240 to fit inclusive of an 11kg bottle which I didn't think was too bad, although haven't looked around. They seem very popular and I am contemplating, although will probably go for the bracket which means don't have to go through side wall.
Not that complex to fit yourself, if a competent diyer I don suppose but otherwise will advise no doubt.
If you are thinking of going to Spain then you will really have problems refilling Gaslow bottles. I understand there are two LPG filling stations in the whole of Spain!
Yes they do a bracket that you can use to avoid holes in vans. As you say would be a warranty issue if not fitted by approved installer <even then I would check>.
It usually fits in gas locker box I think and is an angled bracket that bolts out of sight within locker frame.
The big limitation is the gas locker size, there are other suppliers, look at Tinley tech for example, we have a 38 litre (gross) tank which gives us 29litres net capacity at 80% volume.
Ours isn't in a locker so we have no accomodation issues.
If you need seriously more capacity, then you'll have to look at mod's to the caravan to get the bottle(s) fitted in.
The Gaslow cylinders seem expensive for what they are, but have the advantage possibly in that they will fit in place of standard Calor bottles.
Thanks, yes I have found the bracket in the brochure, that could be a possibility.
I think our locker is a reasonable size, it easily takes 2 CalorLites and a load of other stuff! Height will be the limiting factor. Will need to look at sizes.
We were talking with a Brit in Germany, he had fitted one Gaslow and carried one CalorLite as a "back-up", presumably for situations where he could not find a filling station (Spain?), which seemed a good plan.
I have had a look at the Safefill ones, but there seem to be very few places near us where you can be guaranteed being allowed to fill. No idea what the situation regarding being allowed to fill loose cylinders abroad is.
