Just come back from a site in Wales which had a lovely new loo and shower block but no soap and no loo roll. No fixings for these either, not that they just weren't there.
I had a word with the owners about this, but they just said soap and loo roll would get pinched and it was expensive so they expected campers to provide their own. I said it was a basic necessity and wouldn't mind paying a bit extra for these to be provided. (the site was £15 per night.)
Ok, taking your own loo roll with you isn't such a big deal - BUT Surely washing your hands after using the toilet is the most basic of hygiene necessary?
There was a family there with one child ill with a tummy bug. Using the loos etc just like everyone else, so I can only assume he didn't wash his hands after using the loo and then eating food. ETA - he could have picked up a bug from soneone esle not washing their hands!
The loos had wash basins in there - a lot of campers were using them for their morning wash.
Everyone using the loo has to open the lock and door handle after using the loo, so they are also depositing germs on everything they touch.
I washed my hands as soon as I returned to my outfit.
I don't think I'm being OTT here.
Should we expect soap (and loo roll) as being the very basics you should be paying for in with your pitch fee?
While I understand the owners concerns about theft, there are many obvious ways to circumvent the opportunities for stealing.
I've been on sites where the rolls of toilet paper are within a locked cassette and the soap is in a dispenser.
Should he/she be worried that some miscreant camper come and continually press the dispenser and collect it in a bottle ( I have seen this done!!!) There is a type which dispenses foam that can hardly be stored.
I think, in the case of the roll, he has a point but the soap is a necessity and overall I think the owner is being squeaky (and not clean).
------------- How come when some people visit the fountain of knowledge, they only gargle!!!
Soap yes definatley with all these germ wash your hands ads on tv you would think that it's only right to have soap, everyone washes their hands after a loo visit, and loo roll should be too but I've often taken my own with me to the loos especially bank holidays as they often run out at night, but soap I can't believe they wouldn't have soap, that's pretty appalling and downright dirty .

The road can be tough and rough, but what you put in you get back 10 x more.
A few years ago I stayed at a site in Aberwystwyth, same thing there - no soap, no dispensers even. Put a review on here about it - along with many many other campers who thought the same thing!
a definite yes to both , although i always take some loo roll in case of a shortage , or the stuff there is not to my bums liking ,, , obviously the sites owners are a bunch of penny pinching tight gits ,,

Greetings,
While I understand the owners concerns about theft, there are many obvious ways to circumvent the opportunities for stealing.

Here we mainly use CC sites, and everything is provided, but abroad it is much more variable.
There it is common that toilet paper is not provided, plenty of sites do not have toilet seats (supposed to be easier to keep clean, but very user unfriendly!), the provision of soap is very variable too.
The last site we were on in Belgium had very new toilets, beautifully tiled, but very small cubicles. Absolutely nothing provided, and nowhere to lay down your own stuff either.
What if you are a bit absent minded and just head off to the loo forgetting about the soap and toilet roll. You can always wash your hands when you return to your outfit but you can hardly wait to wipe your bum!! We've never been anywhere that didn't have loo roll and soap.
Hi Jax365, No your are not being Picky. Always thought that having sanitizing equipment like soap, disinfectant, driers was a must to satisfy the Environmental Health Authorities, and was a condition of them being granted a licence.
Have also seen countless people using the loo and not washing their hands, then going on to handle food, the body’s immune system can coupe with a lot of germs if you are healthy, if some one has a weak immune system it could be fatal to them. Think the site owner is being a cheep skate (even at £15 a night), as has been pointed out there is the foam type soap. If he is not providing any soap or toiled paper, he should make his customers aware of this when arriving or booking the site. rant over.

My OH used to be in charge of health and safety at his last place of work and one of his jobs was to insure that there was always soap and loo paper so I am sure it would be the same on a campsite ?

They're being skinflints.
Hi ally b, Maybe the owners grows rhubarb leafs for that.

You would think it would come under a health and safety requirement when they are providing this type of facility.
Just what I was thinking too.
If I were the O.P I would put a review on here and say in it that there was no soap or loo roll, that way anyone visiting there will know what to expect and better still maybe the owner will see it and provide some as they should.
Basic hygene in my book.
I can see this from both sides, so people will vandalise anything to get what they want to steal, so expensive for the owners to replace, not just the normal cost of providing the stuff in the first place, also the PC brigade with their 'no win no fee' law suits because 'little Jonny came out in an ichy rash after using the nasty soap in the sites dispensers, which in turn ruined his holiday' mentality of some people.
Personally, I prefare to take my own stuff over to the loo with me, and always carry a hand gel mini bottle in my bag or pocket for use after using the toilet or before eating whilst out and about. Its not just door handles in loo blocks that become contaminated by peoples unwashed hands, its also the tops of taps and the leavers of the soap dispensers themselves as people touch them after leaving the toilet whilst their hands are still unclean, likewise with the toilet rolls unless they are of the 'one sheet at a time' dispensing canisters such as found in some motorway service station loos. I certainly wouldnt use a loo roll that had been lurking on the back of the toilet cystern, or worse still on the cubicle floor as i have come across in some sites toilets.
If we need loo roll we always carry the small compact Andrex packs which are ideal for the job, and easy enough to keep in your pocket or bag.
