Have done similar myself. Best thing to do is point upwards and then make a two hand clapping motion. Hopefully the owner will get it that there is something wrong and stop when he can and check. Other than that there's nothing else you can do.

I often wonder about putting a big sign to hand which says in large letters CHECK YOUR ROOF VENT! so that I could show it through the windscreen to people! I've seen this so many times! LOL!

We could do with a handsignal that says that very thing and then everyone would know what we were on about!

A friend tried handsignals to the owners of a van which had a open unlocked tailgate (which is illegal) and after much gesturing he overtook and drove off, not wanting the load to fall from the truck and onto him.... At the next roundabout, they caught up with him and pulled him from the car and beat him up. Makes you wary of giving any hand signals or trying to communicate at all!

Hi alpiner, after your reminder about open roof vent, What did I do, cleaning and general tidy up in van, opened the vent to cool van down (scorching hot Monday and Tuesday), moved van to house wall to get battery out to charge, to-day it has rained all day and only just noticed that the vent is still open, and cant get to it at present, glad rain coming straight down, or could find wet van..

If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong

Just returned from holiday.

Driving back on the M42  when 2 seperate car drivers pulled alongside us and gave

very clear signals that our vent had blown open.

Fortunately no damage done just some dust and leaves.

Really appreciated the warning though.

on the m5 last week was following a caravan with rear back window he moved in middle lane and we all get stuck in traffic give them few hand signals to open there window and told them the bathroom door inside the van was swinging back and forward (looked like they had put a huge mirror on the door ) so did my good dead and told them as im sure i would like someone to tell me so it causes no damage or even falls of, and they didnt give a ***t with stayed in the traffic and never sorted it well serves yourself right if it fell of and caused more damage.

What were the very clear signals? I'd like to know how to communicate this without someone taking offence! LOL!

A chap I know bought his first van a couple of months ago, they went off on their first trip with it & lost the sunroof on the M5 somewhere. Lucky for them they got it sorted before they had any bad weather. We try to make sure it's all checked before we leave but it's east done.

I had some strange hand gestures from a Peugeot 406 driver a couple of weeks ago, they were coming towards me with the roof box lid standing upright. I couldn't see anything along te roadside o I guess they'd strappd it down inside but heaven knows what had blown out by the time they spotted it otherwise..

I find it a problem wi the speed limiter on the lorry nowadays, you used to be able to accelerate to catch a vehicle up if it had a problem but you just have to hope nothing goes wrong ahead of you now because you can only blow the horn or flash the lights & most either never use their mirrors or ignore you anyway.
